Brazile: 'Wright One of the More Moderate Black Preachers'

How much trouble is Barack Obama in over the extremism of Jeremiah Wright? Enough that Dem strategist Donna Brazile has been reduced to arguing that as black preachers go, Wright is relatively moderate. Enough that the normally affable Brazile got a bit short with Time editor Mark Halperin, he of the infamous memo to his subordinates during the 2004 presidential campaign while serving as ABC News political director.

The comments came during the panel discussion on today's This Week with George Stephanopoulos on ABC.

If she doesn't get the nomination she would probably be willing to torpedo Obama's campaign simply out of spite. If she can't get the nomination then she feels that no Democrat deserves to win in '08.

When I was a boy growing up in Jamaica, Queens, I remember walking home one Sunday morning along Stuphtin Boulevard and passing one after another storefront Negro church, as they were called in those days.

While I couldn't see in, I could hear their carols and their enthusiasm out on the sidewalk. I was struck by their spirituality, although I wouldn't have called it that back then. It was so unlike the somber Gregorian Chant and Latin Mass I was used to.

But surely, those people spoke to God and He to them, if not in the manner of Pope Gregory, in a manner that God understood.

No catechism, no nun, no priest could tell me that these were people were not God's children, nor did they ever attempt to. So what if their prayers lacked the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur that saved us from doctrinal error? Would not the Christ Who forgave the repentant thief on the Cross, endure an "hallelujah!"?

It seems to me mainline Christianity has lost sight of His Message, so is it surprising that its less thoroughly ecclesiastical adherents may have drifted further still?

The thing is, Wright is just mimicking that enthusiasm and energy. I hate to bring Hitler into this, but the way he was moving, and the things that were coming out of his mouth, and the screeching and screaming; I couldn’t help but be reminded of the infamous Nuremburg rallies that we always see footage of.

I remember the riots after the arrest of Rodney King, when a white truck driver was dragged out and beaten nearly to death (not that they weren’t trying to kill him). Other blacks tried to intervene, and were the ones who helped the victim get to medical care afterwards.

It is funny, we live in Deep South Texas on the coast. We have always gone to quiet calm boring Lutheran church. I had seriously considered going to a black Baptist church instead. They seem so lively and excited and the music is so awesome, but if this is a moderate black church, I think I will stick to boring church with boring music. At least the message at a Lutheran church is love, forgiveness, etc. as Christ taught us!
