Al Qaida Threat Cites Pope
Catholic World News ^ | 3/20/08

Vatican, Mar. 20, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The head of the Al Qaida terrorist network charged that Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) is leading a "crusade" against Islam, and vowed retribution, in a taped message released on the 5th anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq.

In his first public message since last November 29, Osama bin Laden told the people of Europe to prepare for chastisement. "You will be punished," the terrorist chieftain said. The 5-minute message made particular reference to the cartoons published in Danish newspapers, which Muslims have cited as blasphemous.

Italian officials, speaking off the record, said that they were taking the threats seriously. Security around the Vatican, already tight, has been stepped up for the public services of the Easter Triduum.

Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, said that bin Laden's complaints against the Pope were "absolutely baseless." He reminded reporters that the Vatican had issued several statements criticizing the Danish cartoons, characterizing them as an "unacceptable provocation" against Muslims. The Pope, he added, has frequently called for respectful treatment of all religions.

Nevertheless, the papal spokesman noted, the Pope has been singled out for criticism by bin Laden in previously messages. On several occasions, Islamic terrorists have hinted about a strike against the Vatican.

Servants of the devil know who their master's biggest adverseries on earth are.

You'll notice bin Laden didn't bother to threaten the Archbishop of Canterbury.

He didn’t threaten Louis Farrakhan or Rev Wright, either.

Who would win in a fight between Swiss Guards and Al Qaeda Militiamen?

I think the Swiss Guards can handle just about anything. Of course, the solitary attacker will have an advantage, as did the man who shot JPII. But given any sort of actionable intelligence, the Swiss Guard will be formidable.

Muslims think more of the Prophet Muhammad than they do of Allah.

There are only about 100 Swiss Guards ... behind the funny costumes, they're a thoroughly modern Executive Protection outfit.

AQ would have to think big ... very big ... to get past them.

That could be problematic for AQ ... thinking that big is going to draw attention.

Whacking the Pope would be the single biggest mistake al-Quaida could make. They’ve carefully avoided an all-out religious war, and this would set it off.

Ask Joseph Stalin.

“How Many Divisions Does the Pope Have?”~ Joseph Stalin once stated dismissively.

That’s it. Satan’s worst enemy, the man who leads the Catholic Church in the world. I pray for him every day.
