Write in/3rd parrty voting is a luxury that can be indulged in if you live in a non-swing state. For instance, I live in Illinois. Thanks to Chicago, it is the bluest of blue, and I can safely vote third party.
I don’t think it is crucial to unite behind a single third party candidate. The goal is to keep McCain below 50% and Obama/Clinton/Gore lower still.
Don’t forget to vote for non-RINO Republicans on the underticket!

There was a time, not so very long ago, in a country very much like America.
People who called themselves liberals, spent every day and night obsessed with opposing, one man.
Never mind if that man was right. Never mind, if their constant opposition might hurt their own country.
Have conservatives in just a few short months, switched places with liberals?...

I doubt we can find consensus on to vote/not vote for McCain. He is the Independent/Crossover choice candidate, so he's not mine. But I will vote ... DOWN THE TICKET. I'm from South Carolina, Graham is up for election ... being challenged by Buddy Witherspoon in the Primary. The “action” for voting this year won't be at the “top” of the ticket ... it will be starting all over again at the “grass roots” level ... right down there at the bottom with city councilmen and getting REAL Conservatives back into the system from the bottom up. Consensus on going after the bottom of EACH of our local tickets is the one that will win in the long run and one we all could probably agree upon. It isn't as “sexy” but it will work.

Can we as a sector of the political spectrum come to a consenses on a canidate for president? All the evidence is that we can't. Supporters of Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee, and some folks I'm forgetting formed mutually exclusive camps a long time ago, while others were backing McCain or Giuliani as the best equipped to beat the Dems.
None of that has changed, except that trying to form a consensus behind a candidate now is pointless.
I believe we have squandered our opportunity to influence this election by not actively supporting the candidate that best represented conservative positions - and so we were appointed John Mccain.
"We were appointed?" That sounds like a DU post circa January 2001. McCain made his case to Republican voters, and the others didn't.
Now believe me, given the alternatives of Barack/Hillery, I do hope that JM wins, but he will have to do it without my vote.
Is that a comfortable fence you're sitting on?

I dislike McCain, but given the choice between him or Hillary/Obama answering that 3 am phone call it is an easy choice. Giving Hillary/Obama the win by staying home from the election will doom our country. Look at the difference even a small conservative majority on the SCOTUS on the landmark Heller 2nd amendment case. With Hillary/Obama we can be assured of more liberal judges. With Hillary/Obama the daily IEDs and suicide bombing won’t be in Baghdad, but in US cities. Yes, McCain is not my choice by any means, but the alternative is too repugnant to contemplate.

Sure. Here's my consensus.
- I will be voting for conservatives.
- I will not be voting for liberals.
Since John McCain is a liberal Democrat who happens to have an 'R' by his name, I won't be voting for him. I'll have to either do a write-in or vote third-party.
There you go. Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

I’d like to believe that FR had vast influence, but if popular sentiment here influence political races, Fred Thompson would be our candidate, not John McCain.

I believe that with the numbers FR reaches, that we could still make a difference if we could only agree... Every single poster on FR totals up to about 5% of the Democrats who will switch over to vote for McCain if Hillary or Obama is nominated.
McCain doesn't need the support of the tiny portion of the electorate that FR-style conservative opinion represents, and his campaign has made that abundantly clear.
