Attacks kill 57 in Iraq; Green Zone hit

BAGHDAD - Rockets and mortars pounded Baghdad's U.S.-protected Green Zone Sunday and a suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi army post in the northern city of Mosul in a surge of attacks that killed at least 57 people nationwide.

The latest violence underscored the fragile security situation and the resilience of both Sunni and Shiite extremist groups as the war enters its sixth year and the U.S. death toll in the conflict approaches 4,000.

Attacks in Baghdad probably stemmed from rising tensions between rival Shiite groups — some of whom may have been behind the Green Zone blasts. It was the most sustained assault in months against the nerve center of the U.S. mission.

The deadliest attack of the day was in Mosul when a suicide driver slammed his vehicle through a security checkpoint in a hail of gunfire and detonated his explosives in front of an Iraqi headquarters building, killing 13 Iraqi soldiers and injuring 42 other people, police said.

Iraqi guards opened fire on the vehicle but couldn't stop it because the windshield had been bulletproofed, said an Iraqi army officer. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not supposed to release the information.

Mosul, Iraq's third largest city about 225 miles northwest of Baghdad, has been described as the last major urban area where the Sunni extremist al-Qaida group maintains a significant presence.

Doing what they can for their brethren RATs in the election. We can expect more defeatist moaning and groaning from both RAT candidates over this.

Democrats:”The surge has failed! The surge has failed! Baghdad is lost!!! Withdraw immediately!”

EGPWS: "We haven't had a deadly attack home-side since 2001".

Take THAT you anti-American agenda promoting liberals!

What say you Democrats?

The surge has failed! The surge has failed! Baghdad is lost!!! Withdraw immediately!

Notice how the headline is spun to allow you to conclude
that the casualties occurred in the GZ, and probably
included Americans.

Yesterday and today, America’s Pravda was running a
headline of U.S. Iraq deaths “nearing” 4000.
They can’t wait.

I seem to notice that line in almost every MSM article since the surge started...it’s like the reporters are cheerleaders for terrorism.

These people are going to be killing each other until the end of the world. After two tours over there I really am beginning to think they are simply too stupid to handle a democracy. They are like unruly siblings that must be under a parent’s thumb 24 hours a day to keep from being at each other’s throats.

Only because W and the GOP let them.

Most countries, these SOB's would have been lined up against a wall a long time ago.

Can't expect soldiers to fight and die overseas and let the enemy within operate unfettered.

“Saturday: Three U.S. soldiers were killed in an IED attack northwest of Baghdad, along with two Iraqi civilians. Two of the Americans were killed instantly. The third one died later of wounds.”

But some FReepers don’t want to talk about that, because it might make Iraq look like less than the carefully-promoted “success” story.

$35 will buy a Russian RPG that will stop such vehicles. Could Pentagon gilded aquisitions buyers please get over their need to either buy Million dollar missiles or else tell troops to do without?

...and yes, I "Get" that we're talking about Iraqi guards, not U.S. soldiers.

The death toll includes 12 terrorists killed by coalition forces— how absurdly misleading.

The article makes no effort to hide its hope that security will deteriorate.

The media is getting desperate— especially with US combat deaths for March averaging less than one a day.

Gosh, this sounds like it was written by a cheerleader for the enemy. Oh...it was ap? Never mind.

It’s pretty bad when a situation where “only” a few people get killed every day is considered normal or “good” - and that applies whether it’s inner-city Detroit or Iraq.

But we are talking Iraq, and Iraq still has serious stability problems - and it’s not traitorous or “cheerleading for the enemy” to point that out.

I am not blaming you for this, but in the larger context of “Iraq” we have little knowledge of how successful we have been.

Soliders are decidedly not represented as heroes. The idea of enlisting in the military is not publicly affirmed or recommended. We are largely unaware of heroism within our military. That procession of incomplete knowledge reaches practical political outcomes such as successful elections, economic output, infrastructure projects. The list is too long to list in the area of items that are decisive setbacks to the death cult that seeks to reign in US progress globally.

Consequent to this failed context, it is not unreasonable to problematize the media’s ‘accurate’ portrayals of instability. In so doing, the assumptions and goals of the media are rightly called into question. I hope and trust our military is able to accurately assess the situation on the ground. I am saddened that the Media is not more willing to be transparent.

It is also not unfair to point out as recently documented by Harvard researchers that this distortion of information has lead to 10-15% increases in deaths among Coalition partners and Iraqi civilian victims of death cults.

That kind of news is all we hear from the Drive-By Media.

Sad thing is that we have to search for a success story.

I believe the left within this country has done as much, or more, to harm our efforts than the terrorists. What is more, I think they know it, and delight in it.

I'm fine!

The evil ones were quite busy yesterday.

They'll be hunted down and dealt with like all the rest.
