Saudi king to organize interfaith conference with Jewish participants

King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud announces that he will organize interfaith conference involving Christians, Muslims, Jews. Morality, breakdown of traditional values will be among topics up for discussion

Roee Nahmias Published: 03.25.08, 13:08 / Israel News

Saudi King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud announced Tuesday that he will organize a series of meetings involving representatives of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths in an attempt to foster dialogue between adherents of the three main monotheistic faiths.

The king announced that his goal in generating this interfaith dialogue is to attempt to prevent the rapid decline in morals and traditional family values rampant in society, and to restore loyalty and caring as guiding principles in our world.

The London-based Arab language publications al-Hayat and al-Sharq al-Awsat reported Tuesday that the Saudi monarch had stated that humanity is currently facing a serious moral crisis. He also noted that he spoke to Pope Benedict XVI regarding these proposed interfaith meetings, and that “the pontiff greeted him at eye level as a fellow human being in a meeting that he will not soon forget.”

Saudi clerics, revealed the king, were also enthusiastic regarding this interfaith conference. “With Allah’s aid, we will meet our brethren of the Torah and the New Testament. Together we will prevent the decay of morality and family values in our society, and replace the contempt and hurtfulness omnipresent in our world with genuine human fealty.”

And will the Jewish and Christian participants be allowed to celebrate the sabbath while they’re in Saudi Arabia?

I was under the impression that Jews weren’t allowed into Saudi Arabia, period. They certainly aren’t permitted to practice Judaism within the country.

I agree with you that they might make an exception for their Arabist buddies, the Neturei Karta.

King Saud can say what he wants to back his plans, but it’s my take he’d love to see the Wahabbi sect moderate it’s extreme views.

Will the Saudis care to leave their translation earpieces in when Hebrew is spoken this time, or will it be Annapolis all over again?

>>
Under the auspices of a global "peace" conference, the White House sanctioned Jew hatred. The Jew is now contemptible, inferior, ignorant and politically and socially disenfranchised. Reminiscent of how African Americans were treated in the South, the Jewish attendees had separate entrance ways, service entrances and were refused the touching, or shaking of hands by the so called moderate members of the Arab world as if the Jews were lepers. Certain members refused to wear the translation earphones when Olmert spoke.

"Saud Al-Faisel ears, underneath his red keffiyah, were left bare. And no, it wasn't because he understood Hebrew. It was the Saudi method of demonstrating their relationship to the State of Israel. Even as the Israeli Prime Minister was greeting him and speaking of peace, they were refusing to listen. For a minute I thought I was wrong that maybe there was a technical problem. But then I saw his aide next to him – also leaving his ears demonstrably naked.

Then, as Olmert’s speech ended, and the audience applauded. “The Saudi representative also brought his palms together in order to appear polite. Only someone who sat very close to him could see that the never touched. The little game that the Saudis were playing was just one contradiction – the least noticeable one – in a day full of contradictions. ....

I just read last week that the Sauds just announced a “re-training” of 1,000 Imams (sp?) to lessen the teaching of extremist views.

I am not sticking up for the King but they seem to be trying to make a few changes. Now don't get me wrong this is due to self preservation and most likely pressure from the US, but the King knows if he doesn't change things it will be his ass.

Get a load of this! Fraudi King wants to organize an “interfaith conference”! I wonder if he’ll permit Jews and Christians to bring their Bibles, Rosaries (for Catholics), Icons (for Eastern Orthodox), Talit and kipahs (for Jewish people), etc., etc., etc. Shoot, if I had enough chutzpah, as a pro-Israel Catholic, I’d attend, and walk out of the deplaning ramp with a Douay-Rheims Bible under my arm and a big Rosary around my neck, side by side with a Jewish friend wearing a kipah and the biggest talit around!

I think we can all safely assume that the Fraudi King’s proposal is just a bunch of shuck and jive.

This may be fruit from Pope Benedict’s faith and reason comments, or he could have told King Faud - another crusade is in the planning if you do not plat ball.

Just a thought, but I would not want to cross the Pope.

and replace the contempt and hurtfulness omnipresent in our world with genuine human fealty

Then he needs to replace the koran and hadith with the Bible.

Sura (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution of Muslims is worse than slaughter of non-believers...and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah."

Sura (5:33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"

Sura (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"

Bukhari (52:177) - Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Tabari 7:97 The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared,"Kill any Jew who falls under your power."

Ibn Ishaq: 327 - “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.’”

Who are the Neturei Karta?

Just to add a bit to what has already been posted, the Naturei Karta are a very tiny sect of orthodox Jews who dress in Chasidic garb. (Men wear black suits and broad-brimmed black hats, and wear beards and long sideburns.) Unlike the vast majority of Jews, they hold to an anti-Israel position, probably on the grounds that the present Israeli state was not brought into being by G-d. They have been used many times as pawns of anti-Israeli Islamists in their hatefests, and have been known to counterdemonstrate against pro-Israeli demonstrations and events, both in the US and abroad.

“With Allah’s aid, we will meet our brethren of the Torah and the New Testament. Together we will prevent the decay of morality and family values in our society, and replace the contempt and hurtfulness omnipresent in our world with genuine human fealty.

One of the main claims of Islam, is that the West has become decadent.  So what the king seems to be addressing here is an agreement (in his estimation) to review these sins of the West and put an end to them.  Does this truly address the decadence?  Does it address the Western 'abuses' of other nations of the world?  Is it going to devolve into some panacea of Western guilt, repentance by the West and restoration or some massive gifting from the West?

It will be interesting what comes of this.  When one is right, compromise is not advantageous.  I would like to think the Pope sees these efforts in the same light.  I'd imagine King Faud does, but not particularly from a Western perspective.

This effort could be fraught with poor decisions, mistaken fixes and more damage to the developed world community than productive reconsiliation between Islam and the West.

"The Pope is accomplishing what the U.S. State Dept has failed to do for decades."

Why would the State Department want such an accomplishment?

The State Department's job is to foster anti-Americanism and world turmoil, at which it excels.

At least as far as I can discern.

Interesting thoughts, you’re right. No doubt it will not be smooth sailing and all happy agreements. But this and other recent things by the Saudi’s are not bad signs, not exactly as if they are suddenly becoming an enlightened society, but there is some little opening for a ray of light...or that is what I would like to hope!

I have also heard this about Pope Benedict, that when people meet him personally, even these hardened world leaders, something strikes them and they are surprised he does not fit their presumed stereotype. A true man of God may have more power than all the diplomacy and negotiating and strategy to effect good changes.

Not to beat a dead horse...

If this turns out to be a situation where both sides listen and the radical Islamic factions are moderated, it will be a good thing. If it turns out to be a situation where Christianity has to make concessions to Islam, it can only turn out calamitous. I am very leery of some mind-meld between Catholicism and Islam in the interest of achieving a peace for all of humanity.

There is a big movement to reconcile Catholicism and Protestantism. I could very easily see this expanded in the interest of global harmony, by very well meaning people. That disturbs me.

I think this requires diligent observation and frankly voiced opinions by Christians.

I appreciate the response.
