CINCINNATI -- Clarence Glover has a surveillance camera in the chapel of his funeral home. Joseph Garr sometimes carries a revolver in his hearse. Carl Swann Jr. is contemplating leaving the business.
The three directors of black funeral parlors here have been assaulted at services and each has had gunshots fired during burials. Concealed-weapons, pre-funeral intelligence briefings, cameras, panic buttons and armed security guards are becoming as much a part of services as the eulogy.
"I've been in this business 42 years and I'm jittery now," Mr. Glover says.
Across the country, black morticians are changing the way they operate. The reason: a spike in African-American murders -- and the violence that sometimes follows victims to the grave. In an echo of more volatile parts of the world, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, African-American morticians report seeing an increase in violent behavior, and occasional killings, at funerals.

Of course, my midwestern Baptist background left me unprepared for this. In my family, stiff upper lips are the thing, and if you sniffle at a funeral, everyone whips around and stares at you in silence.

I grew up with a black guy who became a successful funeral home owner/operator. We’ve been great friends since childhood, and over the years, he’s told me some things too. What your friend describes is very common, particularly the hysterics and throwing themselves on the body. Because of my position in my church, I’ve had the distinct privelege of working with my good friend on occasion, and have personally seen some insane things at black funerals. I’ve yet to see a gun brought out though although I’ve seen fist fights erupt and a casket tipped over as a result. I’ve also learned that black mourners, particularly the black females, aren’t receptive to white female funeral home assistants either.

what do we expect when drug addled mothers and absent drug addled fathers keep popping out the children in that enviroment?
its nature and its nuture.....you can't put two low intelligent druggies together and expect them to produce model citizens.....
it happens with the white trash as well....
we once at least had the stigma of unwed mothers and divorce....now we have neither, and it has affected the black community more than whites, but whites are catching up.....
there is a picture in the Marriot Inn in Annapolis,MD depicting a time when blacks had dances, and socials and had their own pecking order of educated and refined blacks....
blacks used to police their own...now all we get is "no snitching" ....
