BAGHDAD - Shi'ite militiamen in Basra openly controlled wide swaths of the city yesterday and staged increasingly bold raids on Iraqi government forces sent in five days ago to wrest control from the gunmen, witnesses said, as Iraqi political leaders grew increasingly critical of the stalled assault.

No doubt the NYT is unable to get any of their reporters close to the scene
No. It looks like the New York Times organization cheering for the terrorists once again.
Interestingly (word?) enough, this “headline and story” conflicts with the “ Sadr Says Enough” article dated just a few minutes before and found a couple of items below this one. Oh, I looked at the writers of this article (NYT “News” service, and theBoston Globe) and found the reason. Move along, nothing of any intellectual import to read here, folks.
That was the NYT position yesterday. Today they will be saying Maliki has irreparably ruined the country with his successful attacks on the militias and has set back political unity a decade........
and the NYT will point out that even though they preached for 3 years Iraquis must step up; now they will say they never should have stepped up.
Why would you post NYT’s garbage here anyway......????
So MSM, which is it, are we losing or not.
Question: “Why would you post NYTs garbage here anyway......????”
Answer: Know thy enemy.
The invader strikes again! (That'd be us.) The MSM discovers what made the religion of peace turn to violence.
EXPOSED!
Know thy enemy? Oh come on. Knowing they enemy is NOT printing their propaganda unless you have an agenda. All you had to do is goggle Iraq Sadr and see current developments before posting something that is already old and inaccurate news.........
Wishful thinking perhaps. If sadr is defeated, they will be deeply saddened.
“does this story comport with anything you’ve read elsewhere?”
Well, the headline does, “ Militias control parts of Basra”, according to Gen. Hayden just this morning. I don’t know about the rest of the story.
I trust Freepers to separate the wheat from the chafe, and to analyze and recognize this “news story” for what it is.
I'm not willing to let the Globe's stupidity and bias pass by the boards unnoticed. That's exactly what they want to be able to do when their bias out paces their accuracy.
Why act like obedient lobotomized leftist ideologues by keeping our noses buried in only our own sources. Ignoramuses don’t win wars. I don’t have an identity problem and I never feel threatened by considering the total field of psyops and propaganda. In low intensity cultural conflict, you absolutely have to know what is going on, not so much to understand the mind of the enemy, which is a no-brainer, but to gauge swings in permissability and ascertain the effectiveness of one’s own psyops.
Anyhow it’s fun to watch the MSM commit suicide. They didn’t consider the Swift Boat Internet in their strategic calculations. Time is not on their side.
Haydean on MTP was pre-recorded. This is new news this AM.
Yes, it's completely in line with numerous stories here on FR, describing Putz and his newspaper as a shill for the Extremists.
Al Sadr doesn’t control all the militias in Basra.
I should have pointed at that the Hayden pre-recording was behind the NEW news of Sadr’s pulling his men off the street:
Sadrs call for an end to fighting by his followers comes as his Mahdi Army has taken high casualties over the past six days. Since the fighting began on Tuesday 358 Mahdi Army fighters were killed, 531 were wounded, 343 were captured, and 30 surrendered. The US and Iraqi security forces have killed 125 Mahdi Army fighters in Baghdad alone, while Iraqi security forces have killed 140 Mahdi fighters in Basra.
From March 25-29 the Mahdi Army had an average of 71 of its fighters killed per day. Sixty-nine fighters have been captured per day, and another 160 have been reported wounded per day during the fighting. The US and Iraqi military never came close to inflicting casualties during the height of major combat operations against al Qaeda in Iraq during the summer and fall of 2007.
US and Iraqi forces are maintaining the high pace of operations against the Mahdi Army and the Special Groups. While the daily reporting from Iraq is far from over, initial reports indicate at least 18 Mahdi Army fighters have been killed and another 30 captured.
US soldiers killed 14 Mahdi fighters in Baghdad during a series of separate engagements. Iraqi security forces killed four Mahdi Army fighters and captured another 30 in Babil province, where a major offensive led by the police has been underway.
Yes, you are right. Those that do not respond to his calls to lay down arms are still fair targets. Separating the wheat from the chaff.
