Three out of 10 US public school students do not graduate from high school, and major city school districts only graduate one out of two students, according to a study released Tuesday.
In a report on graduation rates around the country, the EPE Research Center and the America Promise Alliance also showed that the high school graduation rate -- finishing 12 grades of school -- in big cities falls to as low as just 34.6 percent in Baltimore, Maryland, and barely over 40 percent for the troubled Ohio cities of Columbus and Cleveland.
And it said that black and native American student's have effectively a one-in-two chance of getting a high school diploma.
"Our analysis finds that graduating from high school in America's largest cities amounts, essentially, to a coin toss," the study said.

Home life creates 80% of early childhood education. By Junior High School a child’s vocabulary is largely set by what happened BEFORE the child ever went to elementary school, and reinforced by what is provided (or not) daily at home through to Junior High. By 9th grade, the graduation rate has already been set.
This is not a crisis in “education,” it is a crisis in social and political culture.

Presenting it as ‘they have a one-in-two CHANCE of graduating’ avoids dealing with the real problem — lazy kids who blow off school because it’s not cool to study. But they are getting socialized.

50% is bad, 15% is just appalling. Somebody’s doing something wrong.
My brother teaches at one of the worst schools in Cleveland. My best friend teaches at an elementary school there; incidentally, elementary is now K-8. Just think about the implications of that for a second (especially considering that 8th graders nowadays can be 15 years old due to failing grades 1x or more).
From what I know, much of what is destroying the teachers’ ability to teach and manage these kids is their pathetic home lives. Some live in areas where sleeping at night is difficult - there are after hours clubs being operated in people’s homes; shootings and violence throughout the evening.
Moms are single and run through a string of boyfriends and they often move from man to man, so the kids are moved around over and over. My girlfriend told me she has new students come into the classroom continuously throughout the school year.
Many of them do not get meals on a regular basis and are not provided with clothing appropriate to our severe weather.
Imagine having to contend with that and then try to learn in school.
The poor have always been among us, but it has only been within the last 30 years that the children have increasingly been without fathers.
We need fathers and discipline. There is a connection.

Oops - I mean your second sentence about them not wanting to work for a grade.
In my local area many Native American students don’t care about finishing High School because when they turn 18 they can cash in on their share of the casino profits.
Academic achievement is no longer necessary to get what they want in life.
