Officials, students hold anti-violence (anti-gun) rally

Frustrated with the number of students killed by gunfire, community leaders are calling for the passage of new gun legislation. Hundreds of students joined in the movement to reverse a deadly pattern of young people being shot and killed. So far, 20 Chicago public students have been killed by gunfire this school year.

Students from Simeon Career Academy, 8147 S. Vincennes, left school Tuesday with the superintendent's blessing. The students took part in an anti-violence rally at the Thompson Center. Empty desks and pairs of shoes symbolized the young men and women who have been killed...

..."When young people stand up and say enough is enough we will turn the corner on violence in this city and in this country. You are the hope. The young people, we need you to take the lead and say no more guns and no more violence," said Father Michael Pfleger, St. Sabina Church.

...This rally was about and for the youth, but plenty of well-known adults voiced their concern and offered support.

"We need those lawmakers to pass these laws. And I wish I can do them by myself but I can't. I need to get those lawmakers that pass laws that tighten up rules on the gun shops and hold the gun manufacturers accountable," said Governor Rod Blagojevich...

I may be wrong, but isn't it already illegal to own a gun in Chicago? How is MORE legislation going to solve the problem?

I'm sure it was nice for the school kiddies to take a fieldtrip for more anti-gun indoctrination, though.

Problem is that if you lock up the criminals using the guns illegally they will protest their incarceration also.

It is illegal to own a handgun in Chicago, and recently they passed a law that assault rifles are also illegal in Cook County (Chicago and the collar suburbs). Of course the fallacy is that more legislation will solve the problem, or better yet, take all the guns away from the law abiding citizens and then they’ll be no crime. Morons, everyone of the politicians in the State of Illinois. Chicago has 14,000 cops and 50,000+ gangbangers, plus other assorted criminals. There are more handguns illegally held by Chicagoans in their own homes to protect themselves from the criminals because there’s not enough cops and Chicago cops usually show up after all the shootings are done. Not really a safe place to live, regardless of what Da Mayor, King Richard II, has to say about it. He is one of the biggest gun grabbers around; naturally, when you have a 24-hour detail of armed body guards, you don’t fear street violence, unlike the rest of the city, especially in the black and hispanic neighborhoods where they prey on their own. Have I said enough? Lastly, Illinois and the neighbor state to the north, Wisconsin, I believe are the last two states in the Union that don’t have conceal and carry laws on their books....criminals, take notice.

I'm all for this; let's hold every gun manufacturer responsible for every gun crime in the United States. And let's make every car manufacturer responsible for every DUI or accident on the road. And I want those condom companies responsible for every child, and...

Huh, the liberals are walking away for some reason...

The gun shops and gun manufacturers for the most part service legitimate law abiding citizens. Banning guns, punishing gun shops, punishing gun manufacturers does nothing to stop crime; ask the good folks in Washington DC how well their twenty year old ban on handguns has worked to slow the murder rate.

If the youth of this nation want to actually stop violence, it's time to not put up with the leech of the drug culture that is feeding off of all of this, it's time to say no to gangs and not give them safe havens in any neighborhood. And it's time to arm up - 'cause the gangs know that their only valid method of intimidating neighborhoods is with the threat of violence, and if they know a neighborhood is armed to the gills, they'll go find somewhere else to play.

Thanks for all the info. The liberal utopia of Chicago just demonstrates that just banning guns from the peons won’t be enough. Government indoctrination about the inherent evil nature of firearms will soon follow.

Pinheads demanding that the government take away rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Geeesh! What are they teaching these bozos in school? I’ll bet they whine a lot about President Bush using the Patriot Act to “take away” their rights.

10,000 gun laws but we need one more. The one that holds people responsible for their actions regardless of the hand that was dealt to them. Kids are being shot not because of guns but because they the shooters have been empowered by liberalism’s presumption that collective social influences are the only cause for peoples behavior. Its quite the game these liberals have going on. They create the problem, blame Conservatives for it and call for a fix that will create more problems and will require you to give up more rights.

It occurs to me that if we just shot all of the liberals we could cut out the middleman.

Morning Bell: The Right to Self-Defense
http://blog.heritage.org/2008/03/17/morning-bell-the-right-to-self-defense/

Since the District of Columbia first instituted its ban on handguns, there has been only one year (1985) that the homicide rate in the city fell below what it was in 1976. Worse, in 15 of the 29 years since the ban went into effect, D.C. had either the first or secomd highest murder rate among the nation’s largest 50 cities. In 2003, D.C. special police officer Dick Heller joined five other residents and sued to challenge the handgun ban. Heller carries a handgun while on duty as a guard at the Federal Judicial Center and wants to possess one at his home for self-defense. Last week the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the handgun ban, holding that “the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms.” Denied a rehearing, the D.C. mayor applied to the Supreme Court. Joined by gun-control activists, D.C. argues that the Second Amendment protects only a right to arms on service of a government-organized militia. As law professor Nelson Lund points out, this is just not consistent with the text and history of the Constitution. Article I, Section 8 gives Congress complete authority to regulate the militia. Reading the Second Amendment as gun-control advocates do would substantially amend this power. The Bush administration has urged the high court to violate the Second Amendment in the same way Congress has violated the First Amendment with campaign finance laws. In the same vein, the Bush administration has urged the court to impose “reasonable restrictions” on an individual’s right to bear arms.

1) Crackdown on the existing crime and punish the criminals.
2) Allow concealed carry of weapons.
3) Watch the crime rate fall.

Oh.....and
4) Send me the $3 Million you just saved on a multi-year study on how to solve your “crime problem”.

Don’t forget that the population of DC actally declined during that time, although it has gone back up.

I will never rule out the possibility of an armed revolution but unfortunately the popular support for a reestablishment of Constitutional government is next to nothing.

Call Goes Out For Tough Gun Laws As Student Death Toll Rises
Students, Politicians, School Officials, Activists Join In Downtown Rally

Public officials rallied for tougher gun laws Tuesday in the wake of yet another teen shooting, but of the nearly 1,000 Chicago public school students who joined them at the Thompson Center, many said the solutions are more complicated.

Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, of St. Sabina Parish, Mayor Richard M. Daley and Chicago Public Schools Superintendent Arne Duncan were among those at the Thompson Center event.

According to a release from the governor’s office, several proposed bills that he supports would limit individuals to purchasing one gun per month, reinstate an assault-weapon ban, require all gun purchasers to pass a background check and make criminal gun data public.

What the protesters want

Those at Tuesday’s rally are calling on Springfield legislators to:

* Limit the number of guns someone can purchase to no more than one gun per month

* Reinstate the assault-weapon ban

* Require universal background checks on those purchasing guns

* Make data on gun-related crime public

Yep, more gun laws coming from Obama’s fellow Crook County, Illinois Democrat politicians.
