Judge Regrets Kicking Out White Lawyers

(April 2) - An Atlanta, Georgia, judge who ordered white lawyers out of his courtroom so he could lecture African-American defendants called that decision a "mistake" Tuesday night.

Judge Marvin Arrington says he is fed up with the defendants he keeps seeing in his courtroom.

"In retrospect, it was a mistake," Judge Marvin Arrington told CNN. "Because my sheriff said to me, 'Judge, that message should be given to everybody' -- 'Don't violate the law, make something out of yourself, go to school, find a role model, somebody that will help you advance your life.'"

Arrington, who is African-American, is a judge in Fulton County, Georgia, which includes the city of Atlanta.

He said he got fed up seeing a parade of young black defendants shuffle into his courtroom and decided to address them one day last week -- out of the earshot of white lawyers.

I’m surprised at you people!

You should all know that the driving force behind liberal ideology is, “Do as we say - not as we do!”

Is the shock being registered here merely feigned?

CA....

Seriously. I practice in Fulton County from time to time (limited white collar defense) and when you appear with a white defendant as your client, you typically find that on a felony criminal calendar call (with say, 110 defendants on the docket), the courtroom is packed with nearly all black defendants and there will be perhaps one other white defendant other than my client (among the 60-80 defendants who will be present.)

"Judge has heart in the right place."

I have to agree. I lurked on the original thread and it seemed to be pretty much 50/50 but after sleeping on it yeah, it was wrong, if a white guy did it, etc. but I think you nailed it. The guy has a good heart.

Add extra points for saying he was wrong but most importantly for actually giving a damn and he's okay in my book.

“If a Martian were to land in the courtroom he would have to assume it was a system for processing black males.”

I have a favorite nephew who is a police homicide detective in a southern city (which will not be identified here). He once told me if it wasn’t for the black males committing crimes he wouldn’t have a job.

I think this trend started with Johnson’s “Great Society” which destroyed traditional (and often conservative), black families...it devolved into a culture of gangster mentalities coupled with drugs...very sad.

I wonder what happened to the court reporter. The person that is responsible for putting everything into the record? Were they ordered to stop as well?

I'm sure the 'utes' he was lecturing won't pay any attention to some old Uncle Tom who is acting white.

Rev Wrights across the land have done their job of completely alienating (and destroying) a generation and have been rewarded handsomely for it.

“out of the earshot of white lawyers.”
Why? If what his Honor had to say was so upstanding, why not let everyone hear it? It’s good advice (if indeed that’s what he said), that everyone can benefit from, REGARDLESS OF COLOR.

Geee,,imagine if the reverse had happened.

Arrington . . . wanted to talk to the brothas in a 'Come to Jesus' mode
That's just what it looks like to me. Arrington trying to use his own racial identity as a lever to accomplish what in any case is, and ought to be, public policy.

Maybe he should have done it personally and individually . . . there would be no impropriety that I can see, and it might have a bigger effect.

I recall when I moved to Atlanta in 1995, I saw a lot of prosperous, professional, well-educated blacks and thought it was a great thing to see (as opposed to the images from Milwaukee, where I grew up). But not much changed, and I always wondered what it must feel like to see so many people of your own race, in a city which is more hospitable than any other in the US for blacks, failing. I don't know, it must be so disheartening.

So this could be classified as merely "good hearted" racism?

Damn!, the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions.

if it wasn’t for the black males committing crimes he wouldn’t have a job.

Statistically, if we didn't have black people in this country, I couldn't justify a concealed carry permit. For my demographic profile and neighborhood, I stand more chance of falling and hitting my head on a curb and dying than being murdered.

If you read his explanation as to why he kicked the lawyers out, it had nothing to do with race. The article said he wanted to address the defendants by themselves without embarassing them, unfortunately, that day most of the defendants were black and most of the lawyers were white. It had nothing to do with race and everything to do with him being concerned about the direction that these young men were headed. If more strong black male role models were available in these defendant’s lives, perhaps they wouldn’t be there in the first place. Don’t look for something evil in this judge’s intentions.

if it had nothing to do with race then why tell just whites to leave?

He obviously looked at race as he told a race of people to leave the room.
That is not right at all and if a white judge said to all blacks to leave a room there would be an uproar

If we are going to get past race then we must stop excluding/including others based on colour and this is what this judge did
He knew he did wrong as that’s why he said sorry afterwards

Read the article, it says he asked the lawyers to leave and it just so happened that the lawyers happened to be white. Please answer this. What was the judge’s INTENTION?

Whatever it was, he felt the need to apologize for it later.

exactly, he felt he had to say sorry and that he said he made a mistake
he said that he was fed up off lines of blacks being put into his court room

he saw colour
now you may see this differently but I have never looked as someone as black in my job I look at them as are they worthy , are they lazy etc, the people who tend to look at colour and this includes mainly libs are the ones who are the problem of why we will never come together.

take away the black congree,
black channel
black colleges
black funds for schools
hispanic month
gay month
even black history month is not needed to me
why not have a American history month and look at how everyone made America, rights and wrongs, why base it on colour/race
the libs have been doing this for some time and now it’s hurting them basically you reap what you sow

I don’t see why we have affirmative action, it’s clearly wrong and racist, How can I tell my kids that they have to do well at school, work hard and then get told off one of my sons that he never got the college place as the kid who had lesser grades got in, and that was based on colour

also I believe that it was not just laywers who were asked to go either though I await to be corrected off you

Now you may see all this differently but isn’t it nice that we can have a debate, we can discuss and we can see others views unlike some on the left who want to close down channels , other views etc , that is what happens in communist countries or in nazi Germany
