Appearing on Morning Joe a couple weeks ago, Rick Stengel was quick to blame the controversy over Rev. Wright's past remarks on "the incredible ignorance of white Americans" about what goes on in black churches.
But Stengel wasn't quite so forgiving when it came to the past of the current pontiff. Appearing on today's Morning Joe to discuss Time's cover story on Pope Benedict XVI's impending visit to America, Stengel blithely referred to the Pope as having been the Vatican's "hatchet man" during his years as a cardinal.

Time editor says Pope used to be “hatchet man” ping to Today show list.
How ironic.
I want the Pope to be a Hatchet man.
Actually I wish President Bush had been more of a Hatchet man (thinking specifically of the lefty flunkys he left in office).
If there’s anything the Church needs today it’s a “hatcheting” of some deadwood. Starting with American Catholic universities.
I’d be grateful if people could ping to Catholic and other appropriate lists.
Thanks,
Governs
So was Ed Ames once. :)
Bishop Galanti is going to announce the parishes that will be closing in our dioceses.
Of the 72 parishes over 30 of them will be closed or merged.
I am afraid my parish, St Anthony of Padua, Hammonton is on the list. The announcement is due at 1:30 PM today.
Catholic ping
“In Stengel’s mind, defending the venerable doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church made Cardinal Ratzinger a “hatchet man.” But criticizing Rev. Wright for calling on God to damn America? That just exposes white America’s ignorance.”
In Stengel’s irrational mind, his like and his Time are falling by the wayside. They are a reminder of things past.

Thanks for the ping, Mark.
Thanks for pinging.
So defending traditional doctrine with erudite patristics makes one a ‘hatchet man’? Would that make the clergy of the Orthodox Church a broad-axe wielding horde?
No question about it...Nicholas Burns is a prime example still. Before him, there was George Tenet.
Wow! I have got to get me some of them erudite patristics!
So was Ed Ames once. :)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL! I was actually watching the Tonight show when Ed Ames threw the hatchet at the wooden outline of a man. The response was Classic! There was a short pause, and then an eruption of laughter. And, then Johhny accused Ed of trying to circumcise the image. This was undoubtedly one of the funniest episodes I ever saw.
A “hatchet man”? LOL — now that’s just silly! If he were, he’d have more notches than Whitey Bulger just dealing with American bishops! ;-)
Benny needs to declare the new “21st Century Crusade” to drive back the Muslim hoards that are invading and taking over Christian countries.
Another example that "Time" is totally clueless when it comes to dealing with anything Timeless and Eternal .
