PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Lawmakers from California to Kentucky are trying to save money with a drastic and potentially dangerous budget-cutting proposal: releasing tens of thousands of convicts from prison, including drug addicts, thieves and even violent criminals.

Officials acknowledge that the idea carries risks, but they say they have no choice because of huge budget gaps brought on by the slumping economy.

<[>"If we don't find a way to better manage the population at the state prison, we will be forced to spend money to expand the state's prison system — money we don't have," said Jeff Neal, a spokesman for Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri.

Damned idiot politicians. The seems like another ploy to scare people into going along with raising taxes. Again.

Why is it that the government assumes that WE ccan live on less but that the government can't?

I seem to remember that a disproportionate number of the prison population are illegal aliens.

It calls for a multi-tiered approach.

1. Deport all illegals in prison.
2. Everyone on death row gets their sentences immediately implemented.
3. The politicians who thought of this hairbrained scheme get thrown out of office.

Make the prisons self sufficent and rehab the prisoners that aren’t violent back into society. It can be done if the government has the will.

Don't tell me there isn't money for prisons when they are going to send 50 billion... with a B... to Africa for AIDS.... I saw it in the Fresno Bee today... our local congressman Devin Nunes (R) has voted YES on the bill....

I see a lot of trash alongside the highways that needs to be picked up... why not make them work off their sentences... or do we have a failure to communicate...

They should have been building prisons when they *had* the money, instead of wasting it on things like junkets to casinos and the like.

Yep. Make them work to support their familes, pay room and board and compensate victims. Teach them trades and how to function in society. No work...No food or water...Poor work..bread and water.

Screw it. Let them out. I'm tired of pay to house all the pot heads and parole violators that the system wants to keep. These prisons remind me a lot of the way military bases are run. The bigger they are the more powerful the warden and others feel. Keep the murderers, rapists, and car thieves behind bars. Put ankle bracelets on the rest if necessary.

When the freed repeat offenders commit crimes and the victims’ families sue the State, they can give those million to them.

No failure to communicate. Just you playing the ignorant fool. The county inmates do have outside work crews who pick up trash, rake leaves, etc. It doesn't mean it costs less to house them.
A smarter approach IMO is to put the non-violent ones on ankle bracelets and under house arrest.

... including drug addicts, thieves and even violent criminals.

If we would come to our senses and quite putting drug addicts in prison in the first place, we would have more time & money to go after the thieves and violent criminals.

And, if drugs were legal, a lot of those thieves and violent criminals would be workers instead of criminals.

Not sure about that, but it sure doesn't make sense to keep sending addicts back to jail for failed UA's.
