Police make several arrests possibly connected to Zimmermann case

Madison police have made numerous arrests of possible suspects in the continuing homicide investigation of 21-year old University of Wisconsin junior Brittany Zimmermann, police announced today.

Among those arrested on probation holds or previous offenses unrelated to Zimmerman’s murder is the man who was seen going door to door in the Bassett neighborhood — including entering a home on West Washington Avenue — asking for $40 to fix a flat tire.

According to City Council President Mike Verveer, District 4, police have a photo and the name of the man who intruded the house on West Washington Avenue but are not releasing any information.

MPD public information officer Joel DeSpain said police do not have a suspect in the case but are following many leads.

“It’s possible some of those we’ve been talking with could at some point become suspects (in the Zimmermann case), but we don’t know that yet,” DeSpain said. “It’s also possible the suspect or suspects are still on the street. At this point we do not have a suspect or suspects in the case.”

Police are seeking information from anyone who might have seen anything suspicious around the West Doty Street last week to help find the person or persons who brutally murdered Zimmermann in her home on 517 W. Doty Street Wednesday.

DeSpain said he is unsure when crime scene evidence currently being expedited through the Wisconsin State Crime Lab will be released and when police receive the information they will compare it to evidence from prior cases.

“As soon as we have information on [the evidence] and determine if it matches up with anything, it could be a major break in the case,” DeSpain said.

Verveer said he has no plans to hold additional neighborhood meetings at this point, but if the case goes unsolved over the next few weeks, he would anticipate holding more meetings like the one last Saturday where police, city and UW officials addressed safety concerns in the city.

“I am optimistic that these leads will hopefully lead to the case being solved in the coming days,” Verveer said.

Hopefully, this will put an end to the murders in Madison that started back last summer.

For some reason, this murder hasn’t been covered much on the news...or have I missed it?

I agree, I am no longer in the mad city area, but it is a concern of mine since I have family/friends still in the area....

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Zimmerman family, I wonder if the guy that did this had anything to do with the disapperance/killing of Kelly Nolan...I feel for her family cause there’s no closeure at this time with her case ;-{

Madison has been way too tolerant of the nutjobs that roam its streets. I remember living in an apartment building, and if I was the first one out of the building on a winter morning, I had the job of asking the homeless crew in the lobby to please take it outside. This was in a nice, residential neighborhood, not some student apartment slum.

A couple of years ago I needed to go to Wisconsin Historical Society Building in “Sandal City”.
The creeps and POS’s that were on the UW Campus to include the WHS Building were scary!
If I had a child at the Madison-UW I would be very concerned.

You are right, I remember visiting friends near campus or on campus and there was creepy people hanging out near where they lived...I also noticed alot of homeless people, especially young people that used to hang out on State street but when it came to winter time, they were gone... I stopped going down there after a while, cause I didn’t feel safe...

That’s life in a Sanctuary City. You’ll find the same thing happening anywhere that Liberals are running the joint.

I once lived in the apartment building where this young woman was murdered. I also lived alone, was about 18 at the time, going to school, etc.

I didn’t feel unsafe, but that was quite some time ago. It’s a whole different type of city now. Gang Bangers shot up my little Cow Town two years ago. 33 casings found at the scene. In a residential area. At the end of the day while parents and kids were coming home to dinner.

Won’t be long before my town is filled with perverts (we have SIX registered Sex Offenders already, in a town of 6,000) and more violence. We’re 10 miles south of the Free Fire Zone.

I think we’re up to SEVEN unsolved murders now? It’s unprecedented.

You stay safe, you hear? :)

We moved to Madison in June of 1960. It was a wonderful city and I loved it. I went to High School and College there, but the liberals got the city to hire some social workers because "Madison was the only city of its size not to have social workers". They were hired for a 6-month contract and immediately got the city to pay for them to go to Louisiana and Mississippi to "study" the situation. They came back and a week later, poor families started showing up at the bus station, asking for directions to the welfare office.

They were recruited by the social workers who told them they could get immediate welfare, just by showing up. They were refused and they went to court and it was ruled that residency limitations were unfair.

They were given housing next door to us, in a formerly military family development. The place went down the tubes, helped by the God-Damned liberals at the University of Wisconsin.

In the 1950s, Madison, Wisconsin was selected as the best place to live and raise a family. Now, thanks to the liberals, it is a hell hole! Isn't that just a heart-warming story? And it is true!

Don't worry. Greta will pick it up and it will dominate coverage over all other newsworthy items for the next month.

Yes I remember my mom telling me how safe it was back in the 50’s/60’s in Mad town, she went to college there as well and grew up there too, then she met my “father” got married and raised us there, and it has changed alot since I moved away which was in late 1996 and also since I was a kid in the late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s....

Back in my day in Madison (’75-’95) it seemed to be an average of one murder a year. I recall that several years lapsed without a law enforcement shooting incident (if you don’t count the rookie Dane County Deputy who fired his gun in a parking structure - as a warning shot!). Maybe I wasn’t paying attention on my final years there, or maybe the decline didn’t begin until after I left. In the rear view mirror it looks like a lot less than it seemed while living there.

Nah...
This one is a bit too cold, it will only be "FR Exclusives" from here on in.
Now what I want to know is why the NATIONAL coverage of the two teens murdered in 2006 in Mars, PA is not NATIONAL. DAMNIT, where is the outrage?

What about that one in Big Bear in 2004? Why have we seen not anything? Or the one at IUP in 05?
Hell, recall he one in Vegas in 08? Where is everyone?

could you expand a little on the murders you mentioned?...like to know about them...

the most bizzare murder that was NEVER covered IIRC was the murder of 3 women in a beauty shop in Montana, somewhere around Livingston.....it was in the middle of the day and I think the guy used a knife...someone at the time said a stranger wearing dark clothing and a black hat had been seen lurking about....happened several years ago...

A "Progressive" society.
