Mauritanian police have stormed a building in the capital Nouakchott, searching for fighters suspected of links with al-Qaeda.
The suspects, however, managed to flee before the security forces arrived.
A bomb-making factory was found but the gunmen, who're suspected of killing four French touists in December are still on the run.
The raid followed a gunfight between police and fighters on Monday night, at the same house.
The attack on the house followed street clashes in which 2 persons were killed and at least 8 members of the security force were injured.
Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, the president of Mauritania has been visiting policeman who are being treated in hospital after being injured during the gun battle.
Mauritanian police said that the dicovery of an operational bomb factory in the abandoned house indicated the presence of a "terrorist" cell in the capital.
Mohammed Abdallahi Ould Adda, from Mauritania's judicial police force, said: "We found an expllosive device they were preparing to detonate in case the house was assaulted by the security forces."
"We also found a laboratory poised to produce explosives, " added Adda.

You KNOW this won't make American Major Media, because acknowleding that Islamic TError is still a threat will not help get Democrats elected in November.
But that’s not THE Al Qaeda. That’s Al Qaeda in Mauritania! And they weren’t there before the US invaded Iraq!
Where the hell is Mauritanin?
OR better question may be :
What country was it before someone named it Mauritanin?
“four French tourists”
Okay, maybe I’m ignorant on this and maybe Mauritania is a lovel place but of all the places in the world one could go on vacation......
I don’t know how they can say it’s Al Qaeda. Since it’s a country under Islamic control, whose to say it isn’t just regular everyday muzzies doing their obligatory jihad? A group of locals upset that their president Abdallahi (slave of Allah)isn’t imposing sharia law, or enough weekly public stonings of women or chopping of hands of petty thieves?
I was under the impression that it is some sort of tropical island resort, a tourist trap somewhere south Atlantic. There are some Mauritians who own a Jewelly store in town, but they are Christian. They aren't African looking, they are small, Sri Lanka looking, and they speak French. Maybe it's some small Island place along the Africa coast. The Frencj colonized a lot of those places, which are now being radical Islamicized.
I thought it was in West Africa and i was proven right after looking it up. It’s just south of Wester Sahara and is a desert wasteland that has beaches. Since there are beaches everywhere I wouldn’t see the point in going to an Islamic country to visit one.
Maybe they thought they were going to Mauritius which I came across while researching Mauritania. I had never heard of it but it sounds like the place the people you know are from. It’s some islands 600 miles East of Madagascar and it’s mostly Indians.
My guess is that the French tourists were visiting family or friends of the Guelb Moghrein copper miners.
Looks like it was a part of ancient Ghana, then taken over by the Berbers, eventually the French made it their territory, and it established itself as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania around 50 years ago and joined the Arab League.
They speak Arabic and French. It's not on my vacation paradise list.
They speak Arabic and French. In the desert, only the men speak French, so as to keep the women-folk out of touch with the outside world and at home churning goat milk butter.
Is this a real place? Where's it located?
Just did some research into this place - 99.84% Muslim (most being Sunni).
Thanks, I did a google search and found it. Interesting information about it’s early formation.
Al Qaida was not in Mauritania until we invaded it.

Thanks E.
Now, now! Just take a deep breath, or two. My former secretary made so many typos that her nickname was “Whiteout Queen,” and she was a certified “professional.”
Thanks.
Pardon?
