Folks,

It does not matter whether you buy your gas from companies that import from the Middle East.

Oil is a *commodity* and if the US buys more from non Middle Eastern sources, then others will have to buy more from the Middle East since the remaining available supply from non Middle East sources will be less. In the worst case, oil suppliers from various regions will sell to each other if there is an imbalance, or rely on brokers to transfer ownership of the oil.

You are correct my friend!!!

Agreed. This is more meaningless feel-good gestures that have nothning to do with reality. Oil is a global, fungible commodity.

Hmmmm. That throws a bit of a wrench into the premise. For example they have the following on Valero total imports/imports from ME/percentage of imports from ME:

VALERO MARKETING & SUPPLY CO 469,629 153,519 32%

No, the company name is BP Amoco.

What was the "Arco" refinery in Wilmington, Ca. is now the BP refinery, What was Unocal in Rodeo, is now BP.

It is all rather confusing, actually.

We have a Marathon refinery in our area, they WILL NOT buy local crude oil. Illinois oil producers get the shaft, we do not buy Marathon at all.

All the companies fill up at the same refineries, it is the additives added that make the difference.

Dittos from Texas!

I live near Pittsburgh, and Giant Eagle’s Get-Go gets their gasoline from Guttman Oil, which is a local company.

I think we should boycott wheat from Iowa because they voted for Mike Huckabee...

now, who's gonna check each and every kernel of wheat to see where it comes from before buying it?

just - to borrow a phrase - illustrating absurdity by being absurd...

OK. Did some research through the DOE website, which links out to a further site dealing with energy source data. That site is the Energy Information Administration. This is a current spreadsheet by company, fuel type, country of origin:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/data/import.xls

Some armchair analysis: In a very unscientific way, one could glance at this data and generalize that some of the bigger companies originally listed on this thread DO get a significant proportion of their petroleum products from ME countries. To make it really worthwhile, I think you’d need to study historical data for a few years to see if this is a consistent pattern for the particular company. To be useful to would-be boycotters, you’d have to also be able to separate out those petroleum products which go into gas production and/or home heating fuel.

Apparently, the chart also shows that even companies with a country specific origin, like BP, get their products from all over the place. As others have suggested, given the fungibility of the commodity, its supply is interchangeable. However, it appears that there are predominant trends, such as where most of the deliveries come from. The rest, for a given company, are or appear to be, sort of “spot purchases” to fill supply requirements.

Boy, I wish someone could really work up this data and give people like me, who really hate giving my money to the terror supporting nations, a meaningful way to boycott them at the pump.

You are, of course right, but see my post around 74. I think one could study the data for some of the larger companies and develop trends toward major import source data per company. I wish someone could develop this kind of data because, if it could be done meaningfully, this sort of boycott is something that could really make a difference.

I'd rather know how to buy from those who do not buy from OPEC!

OPEC is a cartel that sets prices at the barrel.

OPEC is muslim aka enemy dominated.
