Dangerous animal virus on US mainland?

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is likely to move its research on one of the most contagious animal diseases from an isolated island laboratory to the U.S. mainland near herds of livestock, raising concerns about a catastrophic outbreak

Skeptical Democrats in Congress are demanding to see internal documents they believe highlight the risks and consequences of the decision. An epidemic of the disease, foot and mouth, which only affects animals, could devastate the livestock industry.

One such government report, produced last year and already turned over to lawmakers by the Homeland Security Department, combined commercial satellite images and federal farm data to show the proximity to livestock herds of locations that have been considered for the new lab. "Would an accidental laboratory release at these locations have the potential to affect nearby livestock?" asked the nine-page document. It did not directly answer the question.

I found this interesting. Sometimes, you really have to wonder what Bush is thinking with some of his judgments. I am not seeing the upside here.

Why do they need to move it from Plum Island in the first place?

I used to, then, I realized that he wasn’t! “W” is really an urban boy at heart, still can’t change the sparkplug in his own chainsaw! No one in the whole damn government has figured out what “is” is! Too much Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, not enough stump whipped chitlins!

That is what I was asking myself after I read the article. I am not seeing the upside in making the change.

I doubt that it’s Bush who decided this. There are just as many brain-dead sociopaths in the Bush adminstration as there were in the Clinton administration. It is afterall government.

In fact, probably they are the same people who were in the Clinton administration. Maybe they are even doing all these things intentionally to make Bush look bad.

....With the exception of high profile stuff like illegal immigration, which you can be certain really was decided by Bush.

There is no upside to this.

Someone with long political arms has some property for government purchase at a very high price. Much will be made of choices but be sure the site has already been chosen. This is a dumbass idea; a disaster just waiting to happen.

I will offer my humble analysis.

I think you have barely 50 percent of the “real” story. I’m guessing that the boys in the lab probably are a bit brighter than the dimwits in Washington ever imagined...and something in their developmental area...has taken a turn in a unusual direction.

What you see are security-minded folks who don’t want to get called on the carpet...so they are advocating a move to a more secure atmosphere...and preferring not to really get into a big discussion here. Dust off your old copy of the Andromida Strain....and watch it again. The concept of killing off society...isn’t that radical...and considering the anthrax sample that left the lab in Jersey and got used by someone...after 9-11...maybe this isn’t such a bad idea.

Alarmism. Plum Island is one of only two highest level secure microbial research facilities in the US. The other one is in Atlanta at the CDC.
