Obama defends comments about bitterness in small towns
The Chicago Tribune ^ | April 11, 2008 | John McCormick

Posted on 04/11/2008 7:54:25 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Sen. Barack Obama was criticized Friday by his two fellow presidential candidates for statements he made recently at a San Francisco fundraiser that could be viewed as derogatory toward rural America.

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said Sunday, according to the Huffington Post web site.

"And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not," Obama reportedly continued. "It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Obama does not allow reporters into fundraisers held at private residences, so they were not reported at the time.

The comments could fuel suggestions that Obama can be arrogant. They began circulating on the Internet Friday and drew rapid responses from both Sen. Hillary Clinton, his rival for the Democratic nomination, and Sen. John McCain, the likely Republican nominee.

"It's a remarkable statement and extremely revealing," McCain adviser Steve Schmidt said in a statement. "It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking, it is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans."

Clinton, campaigning in Pennsylvania, also suggested Obama sounded like an elitist.

Obama thinks he's an elitist. Thinks he can talk down to Americans and was going to use “prosaic” language for the folks in Pennsylvania. For those who don't know what “prosaic” means, it means that Obama will “simplify” his language so ya Pennsylvanians can understand it.

Get it ....?

Obama doesn't think Pennsylvanians are smart enough to handle his “smart” talk.

He's not only a baby-terminating, crotch-saluting, America-hating, looney-pastor worshiping, campaign-speech-stealing liar, he's also an insulting jerk.

Another quote:

“I’m out of touch? No, I’m in touch,” he said. “I know exactly what’s going on. I know what’s going on in Pennsylvania, I know what’s going on in Indiana. I know what’s going on in Illinois. People are fed up, they’re angry, frustrated and they’re bitter and they want to see a change in Washington.”

Pinging John Edwards!

When you look around at the people you know, does that describe you? Full of bitterness and despair?

It sure doesn’t describe me or my family!

He just kept repeating that HE’S not out of touch, the other two are.

You know...The damaging part about this, is not that he meant to be huerful, or he intended to be derogatory..the damaging part of his description, is the fact that this is how he sees, and thinks about americans who donn’t live in big city rat warrens of Liberalism. It is eye opening to see that he thinks of small town America as soomehow being natural preserves for americas “not too bright” relatives. Gun totin, bible thumpin, xenophobes, who are somehow clueless, that the products of their labors, are intrinsically tied to international trade.

We are to be pityied.

What ignotant Liberal snobbery. More of the Liberal “Soft Bigotry”.

“Un-FREAKIN’ believable!”

This had better destroy his campaign. Can you imagine how quickly this would have vaporized the campaign of a more urban Republican? I’m thinking of Mitt Romney in particular.

Thing is, with Romney, he was actually talking policy.

Now we have Obama, putting the full weight of his “audacity to hope” behind him. And that’s pretty much the flimsy stuff his whole campaign has been based upon.

I disagree. They just THINK they are better and smarter than the rest of us. If the Pennsylvanians will get out there and hand him a nice defeat, he won’t have carried ANY of the big states Dems need to win the election. He’s already lost the other three.

Go Pennsylvania!!!! Send Obamaramadan packing!!!!

The problem with the Rust Belt states are that they’re not attractive to companies looking to relocate. They have high taxes and high union membership. So what does Obama advocate? Higher taxes and stronger unions.

For the life of me, I don’t know how people swallow the Democrats bunk on the economy.

Article does NOT contain a quote of his defense: “Obama said working class voters then sometimes end up voting on issues like guns and gay marriage.”

The same old liberal BS about how social conservative issues are “separtist” hatred and that it causes some Democrats (specifically in the black community) to vote against their “financial” interests (Republican tax policies).

Guns are a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. Sodomy is a BIBLICAL WRONG.

He wants an living Constitution (which was authored to LIMIT the powers of government) and a living Bible (which will redefine SIN as something to celebrate and indoctrinate children into celebrating).

Whenever someone is rude by cutting in line—or any of that type of thing—I loudly use Socratic irony in exclaiming with obviously-faked shock, “Oh, dear! Sometimes I forget that some people are better than others!”

It loses something in the translation; but it can be effective.

But anytime a black man or woman rises and espouses CONSERVATIVE politics and beliefs, he or she is called a race traitor, an Uncle Tom, a house-n******, et al and pictured in the most hateful stereotypical images.

e·lit·ism

Pronunciation[i-lee-tiz-uhm, ey-lee-] Pronunciation Key -
–noun

1. practice of or belief in rule by an elite.
2. consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.

Maybe -— I say they’re not part of a “select” group. I think they’re uber-liberal Chicago politicians who joined a racist church, pulled the standard political hacks and have no compunction in throwing America aside while they implement their looney ideas.

I think they’re posers and not very bright ones at that given all their public gaffes.

Okay..let’s look at his words here:

“cling to guns”...he says this in a state that takes school off for the first day of deer hunting season!

“antipathy to people who aren’t like them”...in otherwords, they’re racists

“anti-immigrant”...see above

“anti-trade”...this is the biggest joke! Look what the Democrats did by stopping the trade deal with Columbia. Every paper in the nation said it was a horrible mistake and will COST American jobs!

Well done, Barry
