If you look around...there are vast amounts of money given to a large number of political figures now for books. The truth is...none of the books will ever sell to that extent, and the publishers know that.
I suspect if we pulled the curtain back from all of the major book companies...they all have connections to lobby organizations which funnel a vast sum to the book maker, and a huge portion is supposed to pay the writer involved. The guy is paid at least 50 percent than the book can probably ever make.
I was in a book store back in the 90s...when Hillary’s book came out. The chief clerk had asked for a certain number of copies and ended up with double that amount (either by accident or by design by the corporate folks). She ended up with two cases left which were not sold, and some truck drove up one day and picked these up. She thought they ended up at a discount center for half the price they were listed for. Alot of those probably were never really sold and ended up in some warehouse storage area.
