King's Niece: "Racism and Abortion Stem from the Same Poisonous Root"

ATLANTA, April 14, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Dr. Alveda King, Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., today said that racism and abortion are linked. Dr. King has, for the past two weeks been involved in commemorative events of the 40th anniversary of the death of her uncle Martin Luther King Jr. the famed leader of the civil rights movement.

"Abortion and racism are both symptoms of a fundamental human error," stated Dr. King. "The error is thinking that when someone stands in the way of our wants, we can justify getting that person out of our lives. Abortion and racism stem from the same poisonous root, selfishness."

"Of course, to get someone out of our way, we have to come up with rationales for doing so," added Dr. King. "We create the deceptions that the other person is less important, less worthy, less human. These pretenses help us feel a bit better about discriminating against someone because of his skin color or gestational age, but they're still lies and our actions are still wrong."

"The truth is that we are all humans belonging to only one race," said Dr. King. "Racial reconciliation can only mean that we reconcile to the truth that we are all one race of human beings created equal. Even though we have ethnic distinctions, those distinctions do not separate us from the human race any more than do our stage of development or state of physical dependency. We are all fully human. When we face this truth, there is no justification for treating those who look different than us as lesser beings. If we simply treat other people the way we'd like to be treated, racism, abortion, and other forms of inhumanity will be things of the past."

In a speech on the day of the 40th anniversary, Dr. King said: "The fight against abortion is a new frontier in the civil rights movement."

You need to give Hildy a wide passing (not a pass, step past her and move on) ... she has a visceral need to defend the killing of alive unborn children whom she doesn’t consider to be fully human until born. Her image for the Republican party is to drop the stance against abortion on demand so more ‘moderates’ can feel welcome.

Look, abortion is bad...racism is bad...but this is the STUPIDEST argument I’ve ever, ever read. It’s over the top things like this that sets your cause back.

In other words it is not your cause, is it Hildy?

A most excellent point to make, Jeff! And Barry Obama has brought his precious daughters to be inculcated in this fecal material so he most definitely approves of it!

Very true, people generally DON'T want to be helpful to causes they oppose.

Or find themselves participating in.

It is much easier to rationalize the disposal of humanoid entities by first dehumanizing them.

Please be sure to read all the posts. I’m not entirely sure you were pinged to all the posts about you. I’ll just sit here and eat popcorn for the time being, but if the temptation gets too great, I reserve the right to jump in.

Well, abortion in America has snuffed a phenomenal 50,000,000 victims, which even slavery didn't do. So the analogy isn't perfect, but few analogies are.

Her main point--- that both involve the absurd concept that the victim is somewhat subhuman, or "not a person in the full sense of the word" --- is exactly right. Remember the concept that a slave is 3/5 of a person for the purpose of the census?

This is a bit confusing. Great platitudes but reality says 95% of blacks have, and continue, to vote for the Democratic Party, continue to have some abortions, but still have a 70% out of wedlock birth rate.

Can you point out exactly what parts Dr. King wrote that are “stupid” and “over the top?”

Their masters 150 years ago were Democrats. You would think that they would get a mind of their own someday.

I’ll say it just one more time...to equate abortion and racism is ridiculous. That’s it.

Aren't they both immoral? One has to wonder what you are from here.

One has to wonder what you are from here.

I'm someone who sees that trying to equate abortion and racism is pathetic. Now, if you're asking me if both are immoral...that's another question...homosexuality is immoral, does that mean we should equate abortion and homosexuality? How about stealing from your friends..that's immoral too. Should we equate abortion and stealing from your friends? Enough of this. Why is it so important to convince me of your tactics? If you're so sure you're right, why do you even care what I think?
