Republican sorry for calling Obama 'boy'

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Republican Rep. Geoff Davis apologizing to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Monday after referring to him as "that boy."

Addressing a Republican gathering Saturday night, the Kentucky lawmaker said, "That boy's finger does not need to be on the button." Davis was talking about political and national security issues at an annual GOP dinner.

Davis' campaign said it sent a letter to Obama apologizing for the remark, which was widely reported on blogs and newspaper Web sites, including the Lexington Herald-Leader.

"My poor choice of words is regrettable, and was in no way meant to impugn you or your integrity," Davis wrote in the letter delivered to Obama's Washington office Monday afternoon. "I offer my sincere apology to you and ask for your forgiveness."

Earlier, Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said, "It's hard to tell what is more outrageous - Representative Davis' condescending and personal attack, or his absurd and offensive claim that Barack Obama is not prepared to defend America."

The letter was released by Davis campaign manager, Jeremy Hughes.

Davis, who represents Kentucky's 4th Congressional District, has two Republican challengers in the GOP primary May 20. The winner will face Democrat Michael Kelley, a northern Kentucky physician.

You live in Wisconsin and you hate socialists??

That’s like living on the Iron Range and hating Lutefisk!

...”He’s from Kentucky, that’s the way people talk.”...

That’s the way I read it. Further, I would be willing to bet that the “context” - which is what Obama constantly talks about as important - was that of a roomful of southerners, who use that term in a non-racist way to describe males in general.

Boy-O-Boy ... Don't you just love it?

I can't wait until someone invents a thought reading device. Then we will really have some fun.

Let the percieved racism flow.

It would have been far better if he had “apologized” using the same exact words Obama used about the “bitter” Pennsylvanians.

I can’t stop giggling over the Foghorn Leghorn voice that I imagine him using to describe Obama. “Boy, I say, Boy”

Folks in Northern Kaintuckee regularly call everybody "boy", "old boy", "ol'boy" and say "Oh, boy" a lot.

Why Obamasama should be exempt from this is a doggone good question.

One thing many people find upsetting is the fellow who feigns indignation and offense over something you said that was not, in and of itself, offensive. Kind of a snobbish, elitist sort of thing ~ just turns the voters off left and right.

Presidents have to be above this.

We had a list around here somewhere of words and names that can no longer be used.

Two of my favorites: tar-and-feather is supposedly racist because it refers to boiling little black babies alive in tar - supposedly. Actually it’s from colonial America and it happened to royal tax collectors. The other, Little Black Sambo. The story is about an Indian boy, it has nothing to do with Africa but the people who have banned it have probably never read the book.

"Boy" is traditionally used in a negative fashion to refer to Negroes by DEMOCRATS.

If a Republican says "boy" it's just a figure of speech that "don't mean nothin'".

Obamasama knows that ~ some of his staffers, though, are truly ignorant thugs who cannot tell the difference between a white Democrat and a white Republican although it's pretty obvious.

Obama should take immediate action to remove the thugs before they start doing more than bristling at comments they don't comprehend.

Maybe he just should have said “that liberal know-nothing”, then it would’ve been okay. And more accurate.

I’m not to fond of Republicans who apologize and are always on the defensive for every real or imagined slight to every Golden Sainted Minority either!
George Allen would still be Senator instead of that fringe Lunatic Webb if he manned up and ignored the “maccaca” criticism. The obsequious nature of the right has to end.
Joe Biden can call Obama sic”a clean articulate negro” without a whiff of censure. And yet he never looks back.

“How old is Davis? I am in my late 40s and always refer to college aged people as “kids.” Maybe that’s all he meant. Still in this era where one politically incorrect word can end a REPUBLICAN’S career, he should have thought of saying “guy” or some other word instead.”

There, fixed it for ya.

I use the word “Boy” quite a lot and do not mean a thing by it. Of course he is a sensitive little boy who should not even be considered for president.
