NRA Statement on Bloomberg - Wal-Mart Initiative to Retain Store Records of Gun Sales and Force Employee Background Checks

Monday, April 14, 2008

Statement by Chris Cox:

“Today’s announcement by New York City (NYC) Mayor Mike Bloomberg comes as no surprise to National Rifle Association (NRA) members across the country. None of these joint Wal-Mart/Mayor Bloomberg initiatives will lower crime, because they ignore the real cause of crime -- criminals.

Mayor Bloomberg has long confused his NYC mayoral podium for a national bully pulpit from which he feels entitled to push his personal gun control agenda outside NYC. Now, instead of trying to impose his philosophy on other cities and states, Mike Bloomberg has set his sights on our country’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Bloomberg proves his disdain for individual firearm ownership, and his assertion that only the privileged should own a firearm and should have the right to defend themselves and their loved ones.

NRA will continue to oppose any scheme that puts burdens on law-abiding Americans and not on criminals.”

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.

Perfect example of why you should pay a few extra dollars and support your local gun shop(s).

My last present to myself was gun and ammo from WalMart-—got in under the wire, it looks like. BTW, they would not let me take it out of the store-—they called the manager to carry it for me until we were out the door-—bizarre!

When I worked at Rose’s, a local department store, we had to carry the rifles/shotguns out of the store for the customer, but once we were out on the sidewalk, we simply handed the merchandise over to the customer, thanked them, and headed back inside.

Why do they do this?

Prior to this I got all my stuff from an old friend, gunsmith and licensed dealer. Before he died recently and suddenly, he'd just wave bye-bye as I let myself out the door of his store. I guess, therefore, this is not a mandatory procedure for all dealers, huh?

I have absolutely no idea, but the most probable reason is insurance.

I used to walk guys out the door and hand them their SKS or MAK-90, knowing full well that the guy has a couple of boxes of ammo in the bag he is already carrying. If they wanted to rob the store, there would have been absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent them from going back inside.

So I would hazard a guess that it is for insurance purposes and also to keep them from walking around a corner and scaring some grey-haired little old lady out of her socks.

It's been Wal-Mart store policy to escort gun purchasers to the door ever since someone (one of their employees?) bought a gun, loaded it in the store, and shot some people there.

I was told this by a guy when I bought a shotgun on my way to work at Wal-Mart one morning. He asked if I needed any ammo, and I told him, "No, I'm on my way to work". He looked a little surprised for a minute, joked about not letting me have the gun, and then walked me to the door.

do they care about crime or is their objective to erode and denigrate and plunge into insignificance the constitution?

i’m not interested in supporting my local gun shops anymore.
they’ve become elitist rednecks that don’t wanna listen to anything from you, they just wanna sell you something and kick you out.
