Federal agents began a probe into immigration violations today in Chattanooga and several other states.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents along with Chattanooga police raided the Pilgrim's Pride plants in South Chattanooga this morning.
They loaded vans with suspected illegal immigrants.
Other agents hit Pilgrim's Pride plants in Florida and Arkansas.
The probe centers around an alleged scam to provide fake identification for illegal immigrant workers.
Pilgrim's Pride reportedly is cooperating in the investigation.

Federal immigration agents have raided Pilgrim’s Pride poultry plants in Tennessee and four other states in a crackdown on an alleged scam to provide fake identification for illegal immigrant workers.
Julie Myers, Immigration and Customs Enforcement assistant secretary, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that more than 100 people were expected to be arrested on criminal charges. Agents raided the company’s plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., and others in Texas, Arkansas, Florida and West Virginia.
Those facing criminal charges will be detained by U.S. marshals. ICE agents will interview others to decide whether they would be detained or released pending immigration hearings.

Somehow, the market is going to get the two together. I have no problem with certain low-skilled manual labor jobs moving to Mexico. This would allow the people to stay there and perform those jobs.
Economic development in Mexico (or anywhere else in the world) does not hurt us.
Who was fit for those jobs before the jobs became fit only for someone from another country willing to work under such conditions?
We both already know the answer.
Mexico (and other third world countries') quality control, i.e., health and safety standards are not up to ours.
It's difficult enough here with more and more illegals working in these plants where unsanitary conditions (hand washing after bathroom attendance, etc.) are more acceptable!
Potentially Undocumented Workers Investigated at Pilgrim’s Pride
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigators are investigating potentially undocumented workers at the Pilgrim’s Pride plant on Market Street in Chattanooga.
ICE has been out since early this morning as a result of a year-long investigation. Numerous vans with heavily tinted windows have left the plant carrying Pilgrim’s Pride employees to a processing center for questioning.
ICE agents say they hit five Pilgrim’s Pride plants nationwide today.
Ray Atkinson, director of corporate communications with Pilgrim’s Pride says the company was aware of the bust in advance and calls it “planned enforcement action.” Atkinson says the company has been working closely with the US Attorney’s Office and ICE to identify employees who they suspect of identity theft.
Atkinson says no criminal or civil charges have been filed against the company. A spokesperson for ICE confirms that Pilgrim’s Pride has not been charged, however they say it is still an ongoing investigation.
An ICE spokesperson says all of the people taken into custody are being questioned, and those who are not documented will be detained and could be subject to deportation. ICE says in some cases, suspects could be conditionally released but not under after an immigration hearing.
Immigration officials say anyone who needs more information, or suspects a friend or family member may have been arrested can call 24-hours a day at 1-866-341-3858.
There has to be a whole series of things that work together.
1)Increased economic developmnent in Mexico has to lead to better quality control and health and safety standards.
To a great extent, quality control and health and safety are luxury items. They only become important when you have food and shelter handled.
Yes, I believe they are too...it is too bad that many Freepers don’t give them credit when credit is certainly due given that raids have substantially increased and deportations are so high that even Mexico is complaining about too many repatriated Mexicans.
LOL! And for years, I’ve been buying Pilgrim’s Pride to avoid buying Tyson’s. Seems like you just can’t win these days.

And I would go even further and give President Bush some/a lot of this credit too. Another thread said in the first year of ICE in 2003 there were 2,000 deportations, and last year saw 30,000. A drop in the bucket, but I imagine that for every crackdown and arrest many others lose their jobs or aren’t hired by companies in fear of getting caught, along with many others that see their neighbors get kicked out and decide to leave on their own rather than living in fear. This WAS one of his planks on his illegal immigration proposal.
And the border fence is SLOWLY being built (legal property rights are a problem right now).

Dirt poor Americans. People who no longer exist. Our poor have cell phones, Satellite big screen TVs, air conditioning, new cars, etc. and have little desire for manual labor jobs.
Very few Americans hope their children grow up to have manual labor jobs. I do not intend for my two girls to work the fields picking lettuce.
My point is that certain manual labor jobs can move to Mexico instead of moving Mexicans to the jobs. We are ALL better off if this happens. Mexicans with jobs, money, futures, investments, etc have more incentive to stay home and DEMAND RULE OF LAW from their corrupt politicians.
