Vice President, Environmental Leader to Address Carnegie Mellon Grads

Former U.S. Vice President and 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore will address Carnegie Mellon's 2008 graduates at the university's 111th commencement ceremony this May.

"We are very pleased that Al Gore, the nation's leading advocate for the environment, will speak to our graduates at commencement," said Carnegie Mellon President Jared L. Cohon. "He is an inspiring and committed leader, whose beliefs fit well with our university, an institution committed to sustainable, green practices. His impassioned campaigns have led him to some of the world's greatest honors. And we are greatly honored to have him at Carnegie Mellon."

Gore is the author of the bestsellers "Earth in the Balance" and "An Inconvenient Truth," which was the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary that detailed the devastating effects of global warming.

He is the co-winner, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for "informing the world of the dangers posed by climate change." As a member of that panel, Carnegie Mellon Engineering and Public Policy Professor Ed Rubin also shared the Nobel Prize.

This year's commencement will take place May 18 in Gesling Stadium on the Pittsburgh campus. More information about the ceremony can be found at www.cmu.edu/commencement.

Well, looks like I'm not donating any more money to my alma mater for a while.

The bigger the charlatan, the more the eggheads slobber over him. And truth is despised.

It never fails.

I don’t blame you. Let them know why, too. I recently had an opportunity to let my Alma Mater know why they’re not ever going to get another nickel from me and why I will not recommend that any of my grandchildren go there, even though dozens of my relatives have gone there over the years. Maybe if enough people do things like that, they’ll get the message - where it hurts. One thing is for sure, if you don’t say anything, there will be no chance of them getting the message.

I stopped donating to Univ of Colorado long ago. Since the Ward Churchill fiasco, I write them every time they ask for money and tell them why I'm not donating - "I refuse to aid and abet the liberal, leftist claptrap being fed to todays University of Colorado students."

I suggest you do the same at Carnegie Mellon - surely Al Gore fits the category "purveyor of leftist claptrap!"

Maybe some of the many science and engineering graduates will voice some kind of disapproval. Then again, I barely paid attention when I graduated in 1992, and I couldn’t even tell you who the speaker was.

How about messages on the top of the mortarboard like:

“AlGore’s annual energy bill > my student loans”
“Since when is science governed by consensus?”
“You got HIM instead of Randy Pausch?”
“Come try to put your carbon footprint on my ass!”
“Who’s paying for HIS carbon offsets? How much is HIS cut?”

And here I was just going to bookstore’s web site to buy a new sweatshirt.

Go see “Smart People” anyway.

I can understand lib arts schools having this looser, but dad gum, CM is a good school with strong science areas. What is it about universities that the absolute weakest minds rise to be the presidents, etc? Really? Gore is a joke, and if he speaks at CM, it also will descend towards jokehood.

If history has proven itself correct, I wouldn’t suggest that Pittsburghers make outdoor plans for May 18. It actually might snow.

CMU graduates one of the best computer departments in the country. What kind of role model is a doofus like Al Gore who flunked out of law school and divinity school before managing to earn a B.A. in Political Science?!?!

Don't worry, I'll be there.

My daughter is graduating from CMU on May 18.

The university could not have selected a better speaker for our family's big day.

That’s really disappointing, to see a CMU taking this loon seriously.
