Former '60s Radical Is Now Considered Mainstream in Chicago
Washington Post ^ | April 18, 2008 | Peter Slevin

CHICAGO, April 17 -- In the 1960s, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn saw themselves as urban guerrillas who just might be able to overthrow the U.S. government and force an end to the Vietnam War. They were members of the Weather Underground, a radical offshoot of the antiwar movement, who went into hiding for a decade after a bomb accidentally exploded, killing three members of the group.

Nearly 30 years after surrendering to police, Ayers and Dohrn, both in their 60s, are tenured university professors whose work on school reform and juvenile justice have won them bipartisan respect.

Ayers is an informal adviser to Mayor Richard M. Daley and has been awarded more than $50 million in charitable grants for his promotion of small schools as a solution to a crisis in education. Dohrn lectures widely on children's law and serves on a variety of boards and committees. Together, they have raised three boys in the intellectual haven of Hyde Park, where Sen. Barack Obama is a neighbor.

For months, their connection to the Democratic presidential candidate -- they hosted a gathering for him in 1995 when he first ran for the state Senate and later contributed $200 to his reelection campaign -- has been a source of growing anger among conservatives. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign picked up on the connection to suggest skeletons in Obama's closet. On Wednesday night in a televised debate with her rival, Clinton (N.Y.) mentioned it as "an issue that certainly the Republicans will be raising."

In Chicago, however, Ayers is considered so mainstream that Daley issued a statement on Thursday praising him as a "distinguished professor of education" and a "valued member of the Chicago community."

Former '60s Radical Is Now Considered Mainstream in Chicago

Besides his participation in waging war on the United States in the late Sixties and early Seventies by setting off bombs at the Capitol and Pentagon (among several dozen bombings,) Ayers was quoted in the New York Times on Sept. 11, 2001 as saying that he did not regret the bombings and wishes he had done more.

Ayers and Dohrn ... ['s] ... work on school reform and juvenile justice have won them bipartisan respect.

"Bipartisan?" I doubt it. The only respect these criminals have earned is in the eyes of aging hippies and gangster wannabes who never stopped loving "The Revolution."

From the article:

When Obama was asked about Ayers during Wednesday’s debate, he described him as “a guy who lives in my neighborhood.” He said he does not exchange ideas with him “on a regular basis.”

Regular basis? Why on any basis? This issue goes to Obama’s judgement and character. I hope it gets alot more traction than it already has..

Also want Bill Clinton to answer what factors were involved in his pardoning of a few of these characters..

RE: the title,”Former ‘60s Radical Is Now Considered Mainstream in Chicago”, I’d just add: “not to mention those in Washington D.C.”.

Ayers and Dohrn are unrepentant terrorists who now “do such good works” in the eyes of the Washington Post (I somehow missed the “bipartisan” acclaim cited by this fawning article). By this standard, you’d ignore the Second World War and the Holocaust because Adolf Hitler paved the Autobahn, created the “people’s car” the Volkswagen and provided lots of work for the unemployed.

Perhaps the most shocking thing about this to me is not the mainstreaming, but the fact that I doubt Barrack even considered having Dhorn and Ayers as friends would even be an issue. That is totally scary and astounding.

This goes to show how far to the left the current mainstream left today is. I wonder how many mainstream left of that era felt the actions of the Weather Underground were OK.

You got it. The WP is, sadly, correct in stating that Ayers and his ilk are mainstream. That’s simply because the same people are the ones now running the media, our government, our schools, etc. It will be at least another 10 years before this changes, and these scum start to die off.

The lame excuse that he just talks with some “guy who lives in my neighborhood” really nauseated me. How many true Americans would just happen to meet and then voluntarily consort with violent unrepentant enemies of the US who wish they had done more to destroy the US? You pick your friends and acquaintances the same way you pick your pastor.

We suffered through 8 years of “character doesn’t matter.” I hope to God this nation doesn’t make the same mistake twice.

I believe one of the reasons for the “success” of this trash has been the status of Ayers’ father, former chief of Commonwealth Edison (think of what you’re supporting when you pay your electric bills in Chicago). It may just explain why Ayers’ wife, Weatherundergrounder Bernadine Dohrn, despite never having been granted admission to the Bar, somehow ended up with a law job for four years at the mega-firm Sidley and Austin in Chicago and why the current Mayor Daley is wiping the floor with his tongue in praise of these unrepetant terrorists.

They aren't mainstream to me.

I used to work at Sidley & Austin, the Chicago firm where Michele Obama started out (she apparently flunked the Illinois bar on her first try when she was there) and where Barack worked as a summer clerk.

When Ms. Dorn resurfaced after her life as a fugitive, Sidley was really, really excited that she was involved with the son of the CEO of Commonwealth Edison, a huge client of the firm. Despite her sordid past, they moved her into Sidley's Chicago office and tried to get her admitted to the Illinois bar. Unfortunately for Sidley, the bar examiners remembered her bomb-throwing days and refused to approve her candidacy on grounds of character and fitness.

Not to be deterred, Sidley moved her to the New York office and tried the same maneuver with the New York bar. No luck. So, she worked as a legal assistant for a time before moving on to her cushy professorship.

Watching this distinguished old law firm sniffing the crotches of Dorn and Ayers, two unrepentant terrorists, for love of the almighty buck convinced me that our elites will turn traitor at the first scent of green. Is "scum" too strong a word for everyone involved? I think not.

Ayers and Dorn were (still are) change agents. They were either encouraged or hired by our government during the sixties to assure the transition of society in order to move the country to leftist policies.

How else would many notorious radicals, including Tom Hayden, of the SDS, have been able to secure jobs in the government and the classrooms?

Obama’s link to these communists, should he become President, will be the cumulation of 40 years of effort to fully transition the country from Democracy to Socialism.

“Bipartisan” in their case meaning Marxism AND Leninism.
