Weather Service issues heavy snow warning (Anchorage)
Anchorage Daily News ^ | April 25th, 2008 | LISA DEMER

The spring storm that blanketed Anchorage with heavy snow Friday is creating trouble all around town.

Friday evening, the National Weather Service upgraded the situation from an advisory to a heavy snow warning. People should travel only in an emergency, the weather service said.

The deadline for removing studded tires was April 30 -- Wednesday. But state Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan issued an emergency order Friday extending the deadline two weeks for those affected. The new deadline for those in the storm area is May 15.

Around 10 inches of snow fell during the day and another 8 to 15 inches is expected before the storm ends. Snowfall is predicted to continue all night and into Saturday.

Heck, we’ve received about 3 inches so far tonight in Fargo! Isn’t this the warmer 6 months of the year?

If the blizzard conditions as written in a bulletin issued by one of your local stations is any indicator, it sounds like it's going to be long johns and down-filled jackets weather for awhile.

What is with studded tires? Why not use chains?

Chains are for BABIES! Nah, just kiddin'. Chains are a pain; you can't drive fast, they go whump-whump-whump, they fall off, they get tangled up under the car, they're a safety hazard to anybody nearby if they go a flyin', well, they beat up the tire to which they're attached, and really, they're meant to be a temporary solution.

Studded tires, however, you stick 'em on at the start of the winter season, and pretty much that's it until you remove 'em in spring. They work great, perhaps too great. They do have a rep for eating the asphalt right off the road, but they do work fine.

Here in Anchorage, I'd dare to say you see about 50% of folks drive with studs, 40% drive with all-weather tires, and 10% don't know or care what they're drivin' with. Passenger vehicles, you see nobody with chains.

Grrrr! This is unreal! It looks like January outside. :(

I'm glad I yanked all of the dahlias out of the ground yesterday. I planted them on Monday when it was 73 degrees and I actually got a mild sunburn.

Even though I'm a fairly petite woman, if Algore was around, I'd tackle the fat SOB and shove his face in the snow. Sorry I'm so cranky. Between "Earth Week" indoctrination at my son's school and this weather, I'm definitely in a foul mood.

Now, let me tell you how I really feel....LOL

852 inches at Alyeska so far this year, including the 25 inches we got last night.
The avalanche guns are booming as I type.
Turned to rain this morning, yuck what a slushy mess!

I remember that storm in ‘93 where it dumped 6 feet on Kenai/Nikiski over 2 days, then turned to rain for the next 2. Building walls collapsed, churches caved in, and 20% of all the houses in the region had severe structural damage.

My fellow pilot and snowplow business operator dubbed it “The Snowlocaust”! This one could wind up close by the way it sounds.

Fairbanks got one inch of snow. This is a little unusual so late in the spring, but any precipitation in Fairbanks is special because this is a semi-arid region and would be a desert if it weren’t frozen. Once in a while some weather escapes over the Alaska Range and reaches Fairbanks which nearly happened a couple times this winter.

Why not use chains?

School buses have automatic chains, but cars and light trucks use either studded or Blizzak so they can go 55 mph on ice which is what we have 8 months of the year.

At least this storm settled the dust problem we were having last week!
