CO2 contradiction
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | April 26, 2008 | Editorial

Posted on 04/26/2008 2:44:28 PM PDT by Graybeard58

"Major greenhouse gases are accumulating in the air faster than they had been despite efforts to curtail their growth," The Associated Press wrote Friday in summarizing National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research that found concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased by at least 2 parts per million per year since 2000. Today, CO2 levels have climbed to 385 parts per million, compared with 280 ppm in the pre-Industrial Age.

This may seem alarming, but consider:

Global temperatures from the Industrial Revolution to 1998 rose about 2 F. Half of the increase occurred in the 20th century, and most of that came before 1940. Both increases, by the way, were within the rage of normal climate variation.

But while concentrations of CO2 and methane were rising by more than 6 percent in the last decade, the global temperature was falling nearly 1 F. Under the global-warming theory, that's impossible; it happened nonetheless. The documentable, observable, undeniable fact is global warming peaked in 1998, and the planet has been cooling ever since.

With the supposed relationship between rising temperatures and greenhouse-gas irrefutably decoupled, the need for the feckless climate-change bill wending its way through the legislature has evaporated.

The hysteria surrounding the global warming hoax has been in your face. Fortunately, most people don't buy it.

With food and gas prices the way the are...there is no way any republicrat will try pushing this nonsense. People are struggling to pay their bills.

for people who cannot even balance their checkbooks, pay a reasonable price for a home, and manage their love lives to be all in a tizzy about “CO2 ratios” and “carbon footprints” is pretty sick indeed.

"Under the global-warming theory, that's impossible; it happened nonetheless."

That's probably because no one told the sun about "global warming theory" and the sun therefore failed to provide a consistent number of consistently sized sunspots over a consistent period of time.

Fortunately, most people don't buy it.

Unfortunately, Obama, Clinton and McCain do, as well as Bush, Schwarzenegger, Gingrich and a depressing host of others who should know better.

Has someone told Newt and McQueeg about this?...they need to get up to speed on this issue.

Of course, this totally neglects the change in particulate output, the Clean Air Act, etc.

The earth’s environment is so fragile, that it cannot coexist with man.

Just dang, and I liked earth's environment... but if that's the case, it's time for it to go. Restart paving operations.... /sarc

A guy much older than me said,”The earth is a tough old broad.”

And even a casual observation should prove the truth in that.

The math regarding CO2 is somewhat puzzling when you read the various numbers thrown around. CO2 is .036% of the atmosphere today and it has risen 35% in the last 200-300 yrs and it has risen 6% in the last decade. There must have been a deficient in bygone days.

Using the numbers that all the hysterics put out; if the atmosphere was the size of a 5 gallon bucket, the CO2 would be between the size of a pea and a BB. I don’t have a lot of equipment but it seems to me that even if man made C02 were doubled the tipping point couldn’t be reached.

There is way more water vapor in the atmosphere that CO2, but I guess it’s harder to make mankind responsible, no liable, for that.

There have been at least four major ice ages in the Earth's past. Outside these periods, the Earth seems to have been ice-free even in high latitudes.

If there have been multiple ice ages, then of course global temperatures will vary. (Somebody please bring this to the attention of that dimwit Al Gore.)

Today, CO2 levels have climbed to 385 parts per million, compared with 280 ppm in the pre-Industrial Age.

They weren't 280ppm. This was a number cherry picked from actual measurements made throughout the 19th century.
The notion of low pre-industrial CO2 atmospheric level, based on such poor knowledge, became a widely accepted Holy Grail of climate warming models. The modelers ignored the evidence from direct measurements of CO2 in atmospheric air indicating that in 19th century its average concentration was 335 ppmv[11] (Figure 2) . In Figure 2 encircled values show a biased selection of data used to demonstrate that in 19th century atmosphere the CO2 level was 292 ppmv[12]. A study of stomatal frequency in fossil leaves from Holocene lake deposits in Denmark, showing that 9400 years ago CO2 atmospheric level was 333 ppmv, and 9600 years ago 348 ppmv, falsify the concept of stabilized and low CO2 air concentration until the advent of industrial revolution [13].

The editorial is brief and to the point, and it makes sense.

“Of course, this totally neglects the change in particulate output, the Clean Air Act, etc.”

This strikes me as simply muddying the water.

You may be referring to the changes that stopped the last alleged global climate catastrophe caused by man. I'm referring to the global cooling that ended in the mid 1970’s. Perhaps the reduction of particulate output catapulted us from the global cooling of the time to global warming that followed. If so, environmentalists should take credit for global warming. But we still need an explanation for the last ten years. It certainly is not CO2.

How about considering that when the Industrial Revolution began, the world was still in the ‘Little Ice Age’, and that all geological and ice-core data show that CO_2 levels trail average global temperature?
