At least 40 young men who drowned may have died by far more sinister means — serial killings at the hands of a national gang that revels in murdering young men and leaving smiley-face markings at the scene, a team of retired New York City police detectives and criminal justice investigators said Monday.
They believe the victims, including University of Minnesota student Chris Jenkins and Fordham University student Patrick McNeill, didn't accidentally drown but were actually killed by members of the so-called "Smiley Face Gang," KSTP in St. Paul reported.
A smiley-face symbol was found painted at some of the drowning locations — in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa, they told the station.
"They're telling you here that they're into evil, they're very happy as most serial killers are," retired NYPD Det. Kevin Gannon said to KSTP. "They're content with their work and what they're doing and the fact that they're thwarting the police."
Jenkins' body was discovered in the Mississippi River about four months after he disappeared in 2003. To police, his death looked like an accidental fall after a night of drinking.
McNeill drowned in New York City in 1997, also after bar-hopping.
The task force that formed to solve the crimes believes a national crime network has killed at least 40 men — mostly white college students and 20-somethings, often with high grades and impressive athletic records — in about 10 different states.
The team investigated 89 separate cases dating back a decade and said it had connected 40 of them through a variety of evidence — including matching sets of gang graffiti.

Why, what is the connection with that novel?
I think Chris’s parents have been quite vocal, pushing the police to look further at their case, which resulted in his death being changed from “drowning” to “homicide.”
Not to dismiss her doggedness, but what about the rest of the Moms? You’d think there’d be some sort of action plan by now!

A year ago this month a local Ohio State medical student went missing in Columbus, Brian Shaffer. He was last seen at a campus bar, certainly fits the MO. Two days ago a body was found in a local river, the Olentangy, so far have not heard about any ID of the deceased except that because of decomposition, they could not immediately determine gender, race, age, etc.

It’s more likely that the killer/killers are gay. Maybe targeting young males after seeing a photo in the sports section of the local paper and then stalking them. Follow them to a bar and then spike their drink. Wasn’t there a few cases in the past of homosexual pedophiles stalking and killing young boys after seeing their pictures in the paper? I think it was Florida.
I saw on the news tonight that the FBI is denying these murders are linked. Is it because this has been going on under their noses for years and they didn’t have a clue?
I don’t think it’s necessarily targeted at gay men, mostly because of the mention of the ‘impressive athletic records’. For some reason, gay men and athletics just don’t seem to go together. Think of how many openly gay actors or musicians there are... now compare that with the fact that there has never been a professional athlete who was ‘out’ during his athletic career, last I heard at least. I know it sounds stereotypical, but I don’t think I’ve ever met a gay guy who played any sort of sports that didn’t involve a video game console.
‘Trolling the interstates’ could also mean attacks on hitchhikers, guys with broken-down cars, guys who pulled over to the side of the road to pee in the bushes, etc.,

I saw lots of them in 1973 before Wal-Mart became national. K-mart, Gibson’s and TG&Y were the leaders then.
You are exactly right. Chris Jenkins wasn’t gay.
His grandparents live just down the road from me.

That’s probably because it’s less socially acceptable to be gay and in sport than it is in acting etc, so they stay in the closet...
