Regular joes not swallowing Starbucks spin
By Howie Carr | Sunday, May 4, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com

We’re now in prime season for Proposition 2 1/2 override votes, and this year the cities and towns have a new mantra:

“It’s only a cup of coffee!”

The java argument was even made on Friday in the run-up to the override vote Tuesday in the People’s Republic of Brookline.

A snooty editorial writer for a local newspaper instructed the great unwashed as to how little money the Brookline hacks want to extract from workingmen:

“That difference of $110 a year is less than the cost of a Starbucks coffee per week.” Note where they think everyone buys their coffee: Not at Dunkin’, but Starbucks.

In some towns, even the coffee argument has begun to wear thin. One Hamilton resident wrote a letter to his local paper, citing how that extra cup of coffee every year begins to add up over the decades.

“The citizens,” wrote Warren Gray, “can no longer afford 20 cups of coffee a day!”

Oddly, the public servants never say: OK, we don’t need a raise this year. After all, it’s only a cup of coffee. No, they must have more money - it’s all about “respect.” Westboro teachers want respect. Ditto, Boston firefighters.

The hacks used to say they needed to pick your pockets “for the children.” That’s become a cliche, although in Beverly they’ve tried to work around it. The override is no longer for the children, it’s for “our youngest citizens.”

Barbara Anderson of Citizens for Limited Taxation, the best source for information about these votes, notes a new trend this year: raising the ominous specter of teen crime waves if, say, the high school chess club is eliminated.

“The kids may get lost and turn to destructive behavior,” wrote a woman from Ashland. “The crime threat to all citizens will increase.”

Likewise, Lincoln-Sudbury this year faces an end to civilization as we know it: potential loss of “high school sailing and ski teams.”

What can you say except, “No justice, no peace.”

Out in Tolland the argument is, “Sports and clubs build self-esteem and help kids feel they have a place among their peers.”

Unless, of course, their parents can’t afford the higher taxes and have to sell their “place” and move to a more affordable town.

The pending override votes in Hamilton and Wenham have produced a torrent of scare stories. One Wenham soccer mom whined that she now has to pay $145 for her daughter to be in the jazz band.

“The unseen damage here is that kids . . . won’t try something new.”

Sometimes damage is unseen because there isn’t any. So just in time for the meetings (Wenham’s was yesterday; Hamilton’s tomorrow), this dire headline appeared Friday in the Salem News: “Hamilton-Wenham High School placed on warning: Teacher, class cuts threaten school’s accreditation.”

You don’t say? There haven’t been any cuts at the high school, but some educrats are riding to the rescue of another bunch of layabouts, and just before the town meetings. What a coincidence.

Finally, there’s Newton, Ground Zero of municipal waste, home of the new, palatial $200 million Newton North High School. Voters in the Garden City are in an ugly mood as the Prop 2 1/2 override vote approaches on May 20. But in their literature, Newton’s public-sector taxaholics have their bases covered: “Construction has begun on the new (high school), so voting against the override will not affect whether or not that school is built.”

So there, Newton taxpayers, you’re screwed. Your $200 million is gone - the joke’s on you. And now the greedy hacks at City Hall have taken hostages. Give us more money, or we whack 15 cops and “all four library branches will be closed.”

Hey, they have to do something. It’s the skyrocketing cost of “health insurance.” When that happens in the Dreaded Private Sector, the employees are expected to chip in, too: higher co-pays, less coverage, etc. But we can’t expect municipal workers to tighten their belts. They want . . . respect.

Just remember, it’s only a cup of coffee. At Starbucks.

He made his money joking about her dispare and death.
That is low.

I heard it.
It was low.
I truly think that he spewed out what came out of his mouth without thinking.
I hope it was one of those instantaneous reactions to the repetitive I’ve fallen and I can’t get up moments.

He is pissed off that he had to stay at WRKO.

Management sucks, WRKO, the Icon of Talk Radio has reached the ultimate debacle.

Somebody please move Rush to a better station!!

Jason and Julie need to get a brain.

They have destroyed a once great radio station.

They DO have tons of self esteem however...

Typical Liberal Dweebs.

btw Levin was supposed to be on WTKK last night but it was a radio rewind of Severin instead. (I taped it on my comp.,
dubbed to mp3 player, then found it was Severin...)

Agreed on WRKO, etc. As for Rush if you want to hear him without subjecting yourself to WRKO he is on WTAG Worc.,
WHJJ Prov., WGIR in NH, WXTK on the Cape if those come in for you.

For 2000 students. Roughly $6000/student/year just to pay the interest on the mortgage for the school.

Not being a coffee drinker myself, I can't swear to it, but I think DD coffee is still less than the $2+ that comes out to -- they had to pick Starbucks! Wouldn't have the same effect if they said "Only a little more than two cups of DD coffee a week . . . "

Death by Silverlight.

Anyone else out there mourning the passing of the old MediaPlayer internet feed?

Not being able to buffer whole hours for playback later (or now, for that matter) is beginning to grate the nerves here in the, heh, Caribbean... :-)

Lefties want Hill out swooner than later
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, May 7, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com

This Barack-Hillary Show has jumped the shark.

Week after week, the same old same old. It’s gotten more tired than a Paula Abdul meltdown on “American Idol.” He wins one, she wins one.

Barack’s people say, “They’re raising the bar!”

Hillary’s minions say, “They’re moving the goalposts.”

And America is changing the channel.

Don’t the Democrats understand? This is May, a ratings sweeps months. You put your best new episodes on. Instead, we’re getting reruns from February.

“Yes we can!” Obama said last night. Hey, isn’t this is where we came in?

Actually, these next few days are going to be a terrible time for Hillary Clinton. The title of our next episode is, “Get Out Already, Hillary!” It becomes ever clearer just how much the mainstream media is in the satchel for Barack Obama. It’s not just Chris Matthews who gets a tingle up his leg when he hears Barack. They all swoon.

And now they are going to demand that Hillary quit. The din will be incessant. They want to get down to what they consider the real Lord’s work, bashing John McCain. The trust-funded Ivy Leaguers of the press corps want to make the Rev. John Hagee the same household word that Jeremiah Wright has become.

The Clintons know this. Why do you think Paul Begala sounded so bitter on CNN last night?

“We cannot win with eggheads and African-Americans,” he said. “That’s the Dukakis coalition.”

Comparing Barack to Mike Dukakis - you can’t get any further below the belt than that. That’s worse than comparing him to John Kerry, or Al Gore.

But Barack won last night. He got more votes, more delegates. She didn’t get “the game-changer” in the Old North State. So the chorus will swell ever louder amongst the Beautiful People, from Nantucket to Malibu.

Hillary can’t win! It’s time!

Which is why Barack Obama takes the high road, as he did last night in Raleigh. His white grandfather is now a World War II vet, a member of the Greatest Generation. He and his wife are no longer “typical white persons.” Barack doesn’t claim victory over Hillary. That will be left to Matthews and Olbermann and Cafferty and the rest of the amen chorus. They will wield the long knives against the Clintons.

Hillary’s people say they will “crush” Obama in West Virginia next week. Ditto, Kentucky. Beyond that, well, Oregon is latte-liberal land. Guess who wins there. Then South Dakota and Montana - lily-white states, Obama-land.

Last night on the cable channels, the pundits were once again drifting into the past tense as they talked about the Clintons. The miscues are cataloged again and again: terrible organization in the caucus states, blowing $25 million and then losing in Iowa, Bill Clinton comparing Barack to Jesse Jackson.

Barely mentioned was the fact that according to the exit polls, Obama was getting 91 percent black vote in North Carolina. The number just kept appearing in the crawls on the bottom of the screen. It’s left to talk-show callers - not even hosts, but callers - and guys that don’t care anymore like Jackie Mason to raise the obvious question: What if the white vote in North Carolina had gone 91 percent for Hillary?

Do you think the media would be swooning? Would Chris Matthews be getting a tingle in his leg?

And Hillary couldn’t even use Bill, so recently known as the first black president. He was reduced to working the tank towns in white western North Carolina, calling the morning zoo shows on FM radio, denying that he tried to snake Rush Limbaugh’s date in New York City. How the mighty have fallen.

Who would have ever thought it? Hillary Clinton is going to be gone before Sal DiMasi.

Maybe my work PC hasn't been infested by Silverlight, but I still use WM10 to listen to HLC here in Esseff. Just go to "Open URL" and use this address:

mms://wmc1.liquidviewer.net/wrko

If I change the "wrko" to "weei", I can get weei through the same method. Listening to someone on WRKO whining about kid coaching (TwoShay?) as I write this, in fact.

Back to music, I think...
