In another expansion of its prescription drug program that has helped to increase its pharmacy sales, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it's adding a 90-day supply of its prescription drugs for $10, increasing additional medications for women, and unveiling $4 over-the-counter medicines.
Wal-Mart and its Sam's Club pharmacies will fill prescriptions for as many as 350 generic drugs costing $10 for a 90-day supply, an expansion from the existing 30-day supplies that cost $4. Wal-Mart also is adding $9 women's generic prescription drugs for up to a 30-day supply that are used to treat osteoporosis, breast cancer, menopause and hormone deficiency, Wal-Mart said Monday.

Wal-Mart also plans to open about 400 in-store clinics by 2010, from more than 70 in 12 states currently, as part of its initiatives to expand its pharmacy sales.

The reduction of prescription prices is an interesting story, and good news in the battle against socialism.
The real news in my view, though, is the plan to have 400 in-store clinics. These are Doc-in-the-box and nurse-in-the-box practices that are low price and serve a lot of people who are uninsured/underinsured.

That’s a good thing. When I see what my co-pay is for my doctor and what the ins payments are for me to wait in his office for a half an hour and then spend 5 mins with him, it’s extortionate.
There ought to be something inexpensive and available for otherwise healthy people who just need a quick look at something.

wal-mart’s done more dollar-for-dollar
for the welfare folks and working poor
than the fdr-lbj democrat plantation ever did.
(i’m comparing wal-mart’s yearly earnings vs the billions that the u.s throws away on “helping people.”)

This may be their first encounter with a physician for some.
I buy all my drugs at WM. Previously, I paid a co-pay of $10. I pay $4 for the 30 days' worth I get now.

Private sector healthcare at a reasonable cost.
Surely, this cannot be possible.

Kudos to Wal-Mart. Free enterprise works.

On the flipside, if costs were a lot lower the waiting room would be a lot fuller with people wanting every ache and pain checked out.

There ought to be something inexpensive and available for otherwise healthy people who just need a quick look at something. Such as my B.P. meds. I have to pay an office call every 6 months to get it refilled and I have been taking the same B.P. med for more than 10 years.
My insurance pays zero on office calls, the doc charges $71 per. the B.P. medicine is $4 per month at W-M.

You might find what this guy, in StLouis, is doing of interest. I know the site is pretty bare bones but he is trying to keep his costs down.... http://www.docmartinsonline.com/ Nope, it has nothing to do with boots.

Doc-in-the-box and nurse-in-the-box practices that are low priceHow exactly does this work and can they write prescriptions?
I'm surprised to see this happening after Wal-Marts plans for banking was shut down by the financial industry...

The downside is that the $4 generic drugs are imported from China. Your health might vary. ;)

Walmart adds more to the economy and well-being of every community they open shop in. And you can take it from a former Kmart employee, Walmart's pay-scale and benefits package for full time, permanent employees is great. How do you become a full-time, permanent employee at Walmart? Easy. Get hired (you'll make more than minimum wage, and get decent benefits) WORK YOUR ASS OFF (as you should always do; whose ass doesn't need a little work).
Never work for what they're paying you; work at that next level. When you get that next level, repeat.

WM’s strategery is fiendish, when you think about it. if you buy your meds there, you'll check their groceries, vegetables, pick up a bottle of wine, salt for the softener...

More changes due to the rise of HSA’s and high deductible plans. Turns out that a few million of these plans are causing generic prices to plunge. Meanwhile, brand names are generally going up, since they are covered under Medicare and private insurance plans.

For anyone interested here is the Walmart list of Generics.. Also other pharmacy outlets have a matching program to keep your business. Example CVS will match the $4 Walmart list but you’ll have to asked. Some Grocery chains such as HEB and Kroger also have similar programs.
