'Don't speak Spanish…can't get the job?'

When San Bernardino High School teens Jazanique Jackson, Ashanae Brown and Kimyen Hawkins decided they wanted to work this summer, they left nothing to chance.

They knew the rules: plan ahead; role play; be positive; adapt; relate and encourage. So when they hit the streets to start their summer job search they were prepared for virtually every eventuality except one.

¿No habla ingles? Can't speak Spanish.

I worked at Walgreen’s between HS graduation and start of college, and one time, a Hispanic woman gave me a coupon for a toothbrush, but it was the wrong brand. I tried to explain to her that they were different and that the coupon didn’t apply, but I don’t think she got it.

Then there was another incident with a rain check that I won’t get into...

This is America. There should be no reason for anyone denied a job for speaking only English.

Do you think the government should get involved, pass some laws directing these businesses about who they should hire?

Gee. I wonder why so many people think Republicans are racists.

This site used to do a very good job of screening out racist comments but I think the increase in this sort of thing is a side effect of the tolerance for comments about Arabs, Muslims, and Hispanics that go well beyond anything that could be considered a legitimate critique of terrorism, Islam, or illegal immigration. Make people feel comfortable about making bigoted comments and it will eventually just snowball out of control. Yes, I think it's perfectly legitimate to critique terrorism, Arab culture, Islam, illegal immigration, and even self-destructive elemenets of black culture but I don't think providing ammunition for those who think all Republicans are racist is the way to do it. In fact, we saw the damage this sort of intemperate remarks can do 4 years ago when a handful of remarks made here by Jerome Corsi were used to undermine the credibility of the Swift Boat Vets, with whom he was involved or how Ann Coulter's credibility as a serious commentator was pretty much trashed forever by her remarks about converting Muslims to Christianity after killing their leaders. This sort of stuff doesn't turn off the left. It also turns off moderates and even people on the right.

The lingua franca of Rome was Latin, with Greek being important in the east. The literal lingua franca (language of the Franks), a Franco-Italian trade language, didn’t become popular until well after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and was used mostly in the Mediterranean basin. The lingua franca of the rest of Catholic Europe was still Latin until well into Medieval times.

Yes, the government should get involved. Require businesses to check their employees with E-Verify!

Sounds like racial profiling to me.

For real.

I decided to take a vacation in Costa Rica and flew out of Miama for San Jose. My seat mate was a middle aged man who worked at the Miami YMCA. He was going to Costa Rica to take an immersion course in Spanish; he needed it on his job. That, incidentally, was thirty years ago.

I think that government should take itself completely out of the area, and abolish all laws about what criteria businesses may use in deciding who to hire

Until that point is reached, I'd like American-born, English-speaking prospects to not face adverse discrimination

Jazanique Jackson, Ashanae Brown and Kimyen Hawkins

Like it or not, names matter...

Just make up an odd sounding name for your child, and they will have one more impediment in life

And that follows from what I said how, exactly? So I guess in your bizarro world, one must either embrace bigoted comments or embrace the UN?

Also, their parents did not do them any favors for any serious future by naming them Jazanique, Ashanae, and Kimyen.

Was this in like a heavily-Chinese area of town? If not, then why the hell did they hire her?

At the end of the Vietnam war, the San Diego area became home to a large number of Vietnamese, Laotian and Hmong refugees. Along the way, a large number of Chinese and Koreans arrived as well. There are little enclaves of Asian immigrants all over town. There's a fair chance that she wasn't just an employee. She may have been the owner/small business person. Many of the refugee immigrants started small businesses.

My dad sent me to Von's grocery store to pick up some items for dinner. It was the week before Christmas. As I approached the lettuce display, a couple women switched their conversation from English to German. They continued chatting while I picked out my lettuce. As I departed I simply said, "Froliche Weinachten". It's a tough lesson to learn in America. We're pasted as the "ugly Americans" who never learn anything but English. Surprise. That's a very bad assumption.

When I graduated from Revelle College (UCSD), the college graduation requirements included demonstrated verbal and written proficiency in a foreign language. Just taking classes wasn't enough. You had to pass the SATII in the language to meet the written requirement and pass an interview with a native speaker in the language. German was my choice for that requirement. I've picked up other languages as a hobby since that time.

- At least he didn’t say you’re going to vote for Obama just because he’s black.

Didn’t you know? Making bigoted and racist comments is what defines true conservatism for some people here.
