Rush for 23-cent pizzas closes Papa John's stores Chain seeks police help at 6 local shops Thursday, May 8, 2008 9:34 AM Updated: Thursday, May 8, 2008 05:24 PM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Overwhelmed by the response to a promotion offering 23-cent pizzas, Papa John's closed its Columbus stores before dinner today.

Columbus Police officers were called before 5 p.m. to help close the pizza shops because of concerns that the large crowds could become unruly, said Amanda Ford, a police spokeswoman.

She said there are about 20 Papa John's locations in the city, but officers were beginning by assisting at shops on Morse Road, E. Hudson Street, Parsons Avenue, S. Hamilton Road and Kathy Run Lane. They were asking the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for help at a location outside the city on W. Broad Street.

“That’s where they’re having the most issues” with crowd control, she said of the six locations.

The regional manager for the stores also requested special-duty officers to work outside all of the Columbus locations from 6 p.m. to midnight.

“They’re worried about vandalism if people show up and can’t get their 23-cent pizza,” Ford said.

The pizza chain offered the promotion in several Ohio cities as a public-relations gesture after a Papa John's franchise in Washington, D.C., printed T-shirts last week referring to Cleveland Cavaliers’ star LeBron James as a “crybaby.”

The shirts were printed during the Cavaliers’ playoff series with the Washington Wizards. James wears number 23.

“The locations mentioned in the story are either in the hood, or very close to it.”
Macedonia is in the hood? Hardly!

Huh. I would have thought the staff would have liked making people happy. If they were fighting..well I guess that is different. I need to reinforce to my grandson that he is saying please and thank you when I let him go in to buy stuff.

People were standing in it? .

Yes they were. Not I mind you.

But now Franklin county/ Columbus is pretty solidly blue so what could one expect. The IQ quotient goes down more every year.

Kinda pathetic, really ... rioting over 23cent pizza. All that hassle to save $9.77. Get a grip people.

All because poor Lebron James got called a crybaby ... I’m sure he’ll have to dab his watering eyes with the hundred-dollar bills he beds down on every night.

Oh, and my 8 y/o grandson told me that he wants to work for Lil Ceasars and deliver pizzas to people’s houses so I guess they impressed him. He’s a people person though.

it’s Dominos that sucks.

I agree on their pizza, although my wife likes their Brooklyn pizza. But I will eat their hot wings. Had some last night, and they were pretty good for delivery.

If they offered me a pizza for free, I’d turn it down. I hate pizza.

if you are eating Papa Johns, Dominoes or Pizza Hut, you have never had a Pizza.

come to New York City and get the real thing from one of the 4 outer Boroughs, or parts of Long Island or Westchester and a few other surrounding counties. Don't go to Manhattan because the Pizza tends to suck there too except for maybe a few down by Mulberry or Mott street(stay away from places named RAY'S) .

Their pizza is pretty bland. That might be what makes it popular, believe it or not. They were founded buy a guy who used to work for Domino’s, and thought he could do a better job. And I actually know a lot of people who used to work for Domino’s, who now work for Papa John’s.

LOL! I can understand a kid feeling that way.

Seriously, every high school kid should work in fast food. Low pay, no respect, rotten hours. It was quite an education for me.

The locations in the story are all in Columbus. Believe me, East Hudson St. and Parsons Ave. are really rough.

That's usually the case. But hard to do when Bloods and Crips are yelling at you.

The locations mentioned in the story would do a brisk business if they were allowed to take food stamps.

Ah! Guess I shoulda read the story, but the news in Ohi has been swamped with it. A dumb answer in Ohio to a dumber stunt from DC! But they woulda lost a lot of business in Ohio over those t-shirts. Freakin’ dumb!

Uh huh. I progressed from the fryers, to drinks, to the window. They never would let me cook much though.

I actually drove by one and got a great pic. Looked like history in the making. Although, it was close to the hood and the people represented it.

Does anyone else take offense to Lebron being called King and having t=shirts that say “Witness”.

Am I the only on that this bothers? Maybe he should buy us all pizza......crybaby!

I tried a little bit of pepperoni pizza more than 30 years ago. I didn't like it or even the pepperoni. They would have to offer several hundred dollars to eat it. I guess I could hold my nose and eat it.

When I was in the service and went to shakey's pizza I did the all you can eat special, but only ate the mojo potatoes and some chicken and didn't bother with the pizza.

I had papa john’s pizza once. I wouldn’t eat another one for 23-cents, let alone wait in live for one.

IMHO, LBJ is very over-rated. I know that it is a hard thing for some who watch BB, but keep this in mind: I watch the Lakers, and KB just got MVP. 6 down and 10 to go until Phil Jackson gets ring #10.
As far as PJ pizza, I like all kinds...

Try their spinach alfredo pizza. It’s absolutely terrific (unless, of course, you don’t like spinach and garlic.)
