Horror on the Beach.
And in our "It's Been a Bloody Spring" Department, we present the seventh (or is it eighth?) shark attack since the beginning of March...
A white pointer up to five metres (sixteen feet in real measurement) long attacked schoolteacher Jason Cull, 37, while he was swimming with dolphins at Middleton Beach, in front of the Albany Surf Life Saving Club at 7.20am yesterday.Joanne Lucas, 50, who was on the beach after arriving early for surfboat rowing practice, dived into the water after hearing Mr Culls screams for help. I just saw someone thrashing in the water and saying Help me, help me, she said.
I thought it was just a dolphin [in the water] but someone else was screaming, `He has been attacked, so I raced down there.
Mrs Lucas swam 80 metres offshore to retrieve Mr Cull as the shark, one of several sighted off the beach, circled. Just before I got to him he said, Its got my leg. I grabbed him and swam back to shore.
She found great big chunks missing from one of his legs.

Late this afternoon the shark was still menacing beachgoers by refusing to move out of the bay and into open water. (The Shark) was being tracked by the Albany Sea Rescue who have spent most of the day trying to shepherd it out to sea.The Hairy Beast says at the link: "One hopes that if throwing firecrackers at a Sixteen Great White foot doesnt work they have a Plan B. Maybe they should set up speakers and Blare Men At Work Songs at it. A few bars of Land Down Under can clear a tavern in seconds."Albany Sea Rescue vice president Rob Jackman told thewest.com.au that a crew had been out on a rescue boat since 8.30am trying to escort the large 4m long shark out to sea.
Mr Jackman said the shark was proving difficult to move away from the beach.
We are trying to shepherd the shark out to sea but at the moment we are having no luck. It just seems to want to swim around in the same spot, it chops and changes he swims out a bit and then he comes in, Mr Jackman said.
We are really just providing a bit of noise in the water to try and say go away you dont need to stay here its going to be a long long day.
The shark is estimated to be about 100m to 200m off shore at Middleton Beach.
Our world is going crazy when people refuse to even kill a shark which has already attacked a human being. Its insane.
Now, why would a shark, given a choice, swim away from his food source? this case, the humans at the beach?
Sounds like a very brave women though to go out in the water knowing that there was an attacking shark out there. She deserves some sort of metal.
Go to the link - it’s upwards of four sharks, not just one. The attacking fish hung out just TEN FEET away as the four footeight woman dragged the victim in.
WTF ping
she has a metal........she is an angel
If the metal used could be put into a gold medal, that would be nice. ;)
Maybe aluminum?
She is truly a real heroe unlike the other excuses for human beings that make the papers and tabloids. God bless this woman. She did what she had to do and she saved someone’s life. God bless her. Her children should know what a special mom they have.
Dang nab it, 2-3 charges of buckshot at the base of its ugly skull ought to do the trick. Then tow it WAY out to sea so it will attract the others.
My give-a-d**n is completely busted when it comes to sharks, especially those that have already tried to eat a human.
How about a nice sharkskin purse?
This kind of stuff kinda make one wonder what Owl Gore has been telling the Sharks?
If the authorities are too stupid to enact a permanent solution to get these great whites out of the public swimming area, they ought to go all the way and just declare it a protected habitat. Then the swimmers who choose to be shark food can die as happy environmentalists.
At any rate, the woman who saved this guy truly is a hero.
Another of the ever so common yet “extremely rare” shark attacks. No matter how often it happens its always a rare event. Amazing.
would that be a hoot...........she swims out there, saves a man’s life then hand to hand whupps a 17 ft great white then brags it to the beach..........
Now, why would a shark, given a choice, swim away from his food source? this case, the humans at the beach?
I understand they (great whites) often hunt in packs and are looking for seals. The human shilouettte is very similar as viewed from below. The first shark in the pack will strike and release after it realises it is not a seal, (Humans dont have anywhrere near the fat content as a seal and must taste bad by comparison.) After the first shark swims away spitting out the bad taste the second and third sharks sense a meal thrashing and come up and do the same thing.
the article said it was 7:30 ish a.m........I’m in Phoenix,no where near a beach yet I know sharks eat early and at dusk......seems these folk should know that too
Why not just bring out a bucket of chum?
