The Illusion that is Barack Obama
The Australian ^ | May 5, '08 | Fred Siegel

Posted on 05/11/2008 3:33:10 PM PDT by T.L.Sink

Politics produces a gap between words and deeds. Obama exaggerates the credit he deserves for a limited piece of ethics-reform legislation. He embellishes when he presents himslf as having a consistent record on the Iraq war when in fact he's done done a fair amount of zigzagging. He says it was the 1965 bloody attacks on civil rights protesters in Selma, Alabama, that inspired his parents to marry. They had been married for years already. He engages in doubletalk when, on free trade and Iraq, he tells the yokels one thing and the policy people another. He overstates when he presents his very minimal accomplishments in the Illinois Senate. He engages in systematic deception when he says he doedn't take money from lobbyists. He wants to be the conscience of the country without necessarily having one himself. But what makes him different is that there's not just a gap but a CHASM between his actions and his professed principles. For all his Camelot-like rhetoric, Obama is a product of the corrupt political culture that Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass described: "We've had our chief of detectives sent to prison for running the Outfit's (the mob's) jewelry heist ring. We've had white guys with Outfit connections get $100 million in affirmative action contracts from their drinking buddy. Mayor Daley. That's the Chicago way." When Obama had a chance to back clean candidates for the Cook County supervisors or governor, he stayed with allies of the Outfit. He backed Blagojevich for governor, under federal investigation, in part because of Tony Rezko, also on trial, helped Obama buy his house. As state senator, his mentor Emil Jones, machine-made president of the Senate, allowed Obama to sponsor a minor ethics bill. In return, Obama made sure plenty of pork went to Jones' district.

Siegel continues: "Some of Obama's advantage came from the efforts of his political ally, the flame-throwing reverend James Meeks, who mocks black moderates as "ni**ers" and is an Illinois state senator and pastor of a mega-church which has put its vote-pulling muscle behind Obama. Then, Obama appeared before a supposedly closed San Francisco audience and made his infamous remarks about small-town Pennsylvanians who "cling to guns or religion or antipathy towards people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." This remark about bitter, white, working-class small town voters came fom a man who belongs to a church built on bitterness, rancour and conspiratorial fear. Wright's "black theology" is essentially a Christianized version of Malcolm X's ideology of hate. Obama and Michelle earned over a million dollars between 2000 and 2004. But the man who preaches compassion and mutuality gave all of 1 percent to charity during those years - and most of that to WRIGHT'S CHURCH! In the Illinois Senate he made a speciality of voting present but was considered more liberal than 86 percent of his colleagues His voting record has moved even further Left since then. The National Journal ranks him the MOST liberal member of the Senate. And the radical Left Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) gives him a 97.5 percent rating."

Note to invisib1e hand:

It’s the information that’s important, not so much the packaging.

Any accurate and verificable information is appreciated by me. It is difficult to get good, solid political facts about Senator Obama because the MSM in the U.S.A. just won’t publish any of it.

Wait until the debates and once we get beyond the primaries.

Actually, McCain should get started very soon.

Reminding the “middle class” about Obama’s comments will change minds (I hope). And eventually, Obama will have to say something else other than “change.”

On the other hand, most Dems defended Bill Clinton even after he had lied to the American people, the investigators from a sexual harassment case, and the Feds.

Can anyone point to a single accomplishment that makes B. Hussein Obama more qualified than the Dan Quayle the left laughed at 20 years ago?

Anyone? Anything?

You’re so right. The MSM is completely in the tank for Obama and has been ever since his vapid speech at the Democratic Convention. They’re doing everything in their power to sanitize his record. This is hard to do when that record and his experience are very short - and all bad!

No - unless you want to point to a few “accomplishments” that are very bad!

Stanley Ann Dunham was a willful wild child of the Baby Boom generation, who took up with a foreigner as much to make a point with her parents, as to be out on some new frontier of social evolution. Barack Obama, like all of us, had no choice in selection of parents. It is what he made of the situation of his upbringing that makes the difference.

Certainly Obama was offered a vast number of choices in what he could do in his situations, far more, probably, than the typical child of mixed marriages. But given a choice, he still gravitated toward some of the “easy” pathways, exerting less than optimal effort to really become something. Up to now, he has been a very big frog in a relatively small pond. That leads to personal complacency and heightened expectations.

The pond is now MUCH larger, and the relative advantage is much diminished. Has Obama discovered that he may be comparatively unprepared for some the challenges that are coming? Is he doing anything to make himself more prepared when those challenges do arise?

Winning the confidence of large numbers of people is not a matter of avoiding criticism, it is MEETING the criticism with valid and reasonable rebuttals. Or even getting out ahead of potential criticism, and making your detractors look foolish and unprepared to challenge you.

There is a fine line out there, between being a seasoned statesman and a demagogue. And so far, Obama seems ready and willing to go for the demagogue.

Never in our history has a man so unqualified come so close to being President.

I dunno, Aaron Burr has to be in the running, although he had demonstrated physical courage and an animal cunning.

I think you’re right. Obama and his devotees have very carfully constructed an “image” that is designed to appeal to voters. This image has very little connection to reality. Jonah Goldberg, in his book “Liberal Fascism,” descibes how JFK and his political propagandists did this for him. It worked politically. But, we now know that the “image” these people constructed of JFK is totally at variance with the real JFK. “Camelot” was not the reality but many people will always choose a romantized fantasy over the facts.

I know and what makes it really scary is that in these life-and-death times of constant crises, we’ve never before ever required political skill and leadership so much as as right now. Partisanship aside, it’s frightening that such an empty suit may become the leader of the Free World.
