McCain calls for greenhouse-gas cuts, criticizes Bush administration

WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain called Monday for reductions in carbon emissions and criticized the Bush administration for failing to lead the fight against climate change.

"We have many advantages in the fight against global warming, but time is not one of them. … We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great," the Arizona Republican said in a speech delivered at a wind-energy facility in Portland, Ore. "The most relevant question is whether our own government is equal to the challenge."

McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, proposed a "cap-and-trade" system to reduce greenhouse gases and allow the sale of rights to excess emissions by firms that reduce their own emissions. ...

Such a system would "change the dynamic of our energy economy" by giving companies incentives to invest in alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear, clean coal, biomass and biofuels, McCain said, providing the United States with an energy supply "that is safe, secure, diverse and domestic."

--snip--

McCain's proposal falls short of those of Democratic contenders Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. They both called for reducing emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, in line with what's recommended by most scientists, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

"To his credit, Senator McCain wants to do something serious about global warming, but his proposal falls far short of what the science says we need to do today," said Gene Karpinski, president of the nonpartisan League of Conservation Voters. McCain's lifetime score from the League of Conservation Voters is 24 percent. That compares with 87 percent for Clinton and 86 percent for Obama.

“Rush is lamenting”

Rush said it was embarrassing and frightening. He is oh so right. How in the world did McCain become our candidate? In my large circle of conservative friends I do not know one who wanted McCain. Out of the large list of candidates we started with, not one wanted McCain.

There’s a whole ‘nother thread about that subject. I’m saying I’m voting for him and going to fight him every step of the way. But I won’t vote for Hussein Obama, nor Clinton, and I won’t stay home.

This is why I give up. I can’t bring myself to vote for any of these fools. The people in America are not interested in some hyperbole green energy plan when they’re paying $4 a gallon. People in America want the cure now and the only cure within a couple years is expanded drilling and refining capacity.

McCain's energy policy includes "CAP AND TRADE" (a windfall for government jobs and lawyers) and NOT drilling ANWR!!

And the GOP expects conservatives are to rally behind him? Amazing.

“the only cure within a couple years is expanded drilling and refining capacity.”

You mean TWENTY years, right?

Enviromentalist, Inc and thier lawyers will fight ANTHING we try to do, tooth and nail, since common sense doesn’t elect Socialist Democrats.

They NEED the people living in misery for thier agendas to get passed.

You’re right. Throw in the greens, lawyers and our judiciary and 20 years sounds about right.

The science is settled, and we have reached a consensus: John McCain is an idiot.

Anyone who disagrees is a denier.

30 years. Since the creation of the Department of Energy was created under Carter the US Govt has pushed this dogma of “Conservation not Consumption” We are hearing from Washington the exact same things in 2008 they were saying in 1978.

At what point are the sheep like voters in this country going to quit listening to all the old slogans and demagoguery on Energy Policy and fire these stupid DC clowns?

Vote for the same two parties for 150 years, and you get identical candidates. The political parties are all about consolidation of power, not representation.

Don't know what you are complaining about. You should be ecstatic, all the Presidential Candidates are pushing your personal "Hate Oil" dogmas.

Bob Barr and the Libertarians are looking better every day.

Actually there is a lot of truth to that statement. Saw him on Glenn Beck last night and thought that he may just be the alternative to McShame.

None of the candidates are doing anything about replacing oil. They are just working to make it more and more unaffordable.
