The Detroit City Council has taken the first step toward removing Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick over a scandal involving explicit text messages to his former aide.
The council's 5-4 vote Tuesday begins a process aimed at removing Kilpatrick. Council members also voted to ask Gov. Jennifer Granholm to remove the mayor and voted to publicly censure him.
. . . The mayor's office has said the council's actions are politically motivated.
. . . Prosecutors have charged the two with perjury and obstruction of justice.

But almost immediately after the vote was completed, Councilwoman JoAnn Watson announced that she had just received a note from Kilpatrick and would be reconsidering her votes in favor of seeking the mayors removal. -Detroit Free Press

The devil in me hopes that Grandmole keeps Kwamie in office just to punish the Detroiters who elected Kwamie in the first place. They made their bed and they can sleep in it.
Grandmole can claim cover by not wanting to disenfranchise the democrats who elected Kwamie.

When is he up for reelection, anyway? It must not be this year, or the whole issue would be a non-starter...sort of...with an ego like his he’ll run again, and Detroit being Detroit he’ll win again.

Kwamie has two years to go in his current term, then 20 in his prison term.
