LOS ANGELES, May 14, 2008 (Reuters) Alaska hit a milestone on Wednesday that could be a sign of things to come around the United States this summer -- it became the first state where the average price for regular gasoline reached $4 per gallon.
"It wasn't totally unexpected," said Geoff Sundstrom, spokesman for the travel and auto group AAA which issues a daily gasoline price report.
"Oil prices recently brushed against $127 per barrel so certainly, $4 gasoline could be in the cards for other states as well this summer," said Sundstrom.
At $4 per gallon, filling up a 15-gallon tank will cost $60.
Alaskans using self-service regular gasoline paid $4.006 per gallon, said the AAA Wednesday report.
The U.S. average for regular gasoline hit a record $3.758 per gallon, the same report showed.
A year ago, the U.S. average price was $3.3354 a gallon and in Alaska, the average price was $2.946 a gallon.

Come to NY, $4 a gallon’s been here for a couple of weeks. Of course, those of us close enough to NJ go down there to fill up!
All grades have been over $4/gal here in Maui for over a month now.
Yup, California too.
now, on to $5.00.
Big lie folks! I’m here on Maui and we have been paying over $4 a gallon for more than a couple of months. Right now regular is $4.23. It’s been in all the papers here that Hawaii is the highest in the nation. Nice try Alaska but I am sorry to say, we beat you.
Proving once again that AAA is severely out of touch!
Amazing. The economy is going to be destroyed by these prices.
Sorry fellow Mauian. I didn’t see your post when I posted mine. Aloha (Kihei, where you stay?)
Or some such nonsense.
I have been pay over $4 for a while now, but I use premium in my car.
