U.S. House defeats $162.5 bln in new war funds Thu May 15, 2008 3:42pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday defeated legislation that would have funded the war in Iraq for another year, in a surprise move that the Senate could overturn.

By a vote of 149-141, the Democrat-controlled House rejected a measure that would have given the Pentagon $162.5 billion to keep the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan running through next summer, slightly below President George W. Bush's request.

A large group of anti-war House Democrats voted against the funds. That, coupled with 132 Republicans voting "present," meaning neither "yes" nor "no," killed the measure for now.

Yep. And if Republicans are smart, they will make this a campaign issue.

Why in the HELL would 132 Republicans vote ‘present’ instead of a simple ‘Yes’???

The names of all those voting against funding our troops should be published, along with the 132 spineless creatures who failed to vote.

132 Republicans voting "present," meaning neither "yes" nor "no

This goes right to the heart of what is wrong with the sudo-Republican party as a whole and this country in general.

Some kind of strategic vote, maybe. So they force the Dim congressional leaders to taylor some aspect of this bill slightly more to their liking, until they have “traded enough horses”, and then they vote “yes”.

Obama's voting history includes a lot of "present" votes.

The Republican party is following in the footsteps of a great anti-American with this behavior.

Present????? Hardly. Out is better. Out of their minds that is.

Guess there is cheering in the mountains in Afghanistan and Waziristan tonight.

What gutless imbicles. The GOP is room temperature.

I am not going to vote for McCain. I will vote for local and state offices. The Rats would walk all over him anyway.Let Obama win and *if we survive*, a good conservative should win in 2012. Why prolong the agony. Let the stuff hit the fan and wake up the stupid American people.

Hold on! There are only 435 seats in the House. How do these numbers add up? 149 "nays" plus 141 "yeas" plus 132 "present" adds up to 422 -- but the "yeas" and "presents" yield 273 Republicans?

Don't we wish?

This report earns an "F" on math.
