Girl's fear of school costs district thousands

Rebecca Maykish is 17 and dreads school so much that she stopped going regularly.

In fourth grade.

Those days off have come at a price to her school district and the Palmerton taxpayers who support it. Since 2004, the Palmerton Area School Board has authorized payments of more than $45,000 to help Rebecca make up for her missed school days. Rebecca's mother, Barbara, has used the money for at-home tutoring and education software purchases. She has also spent it on modeling classes for Rebecca, subscriptions to teen magazines, and travel to New York and Toronto with a summer camp.

All of the expenses were approved by the district.

Until December, Rebecca's education was paid through a compensatory education fund, which is supported through local property taxes and controlled by the school board. Compensatory education funds are distributed to students whose school districts have failed to give them an appropriate education, as required by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

Maybe a new run on “fear of work for pay” disorder will get new highs in welfare payments as well........:o)

Stay safe !

Just don’t try to pull your kids out of public school because they have homophobia. That’s child abuse.

But much lower cost voucher for home schooling or private schools are, of course, unthinkable.

I think it’s great. The screwed-up kids are the ones who don’t mind being treated like a litter of puppies or a herd of sheep. Let the stupid taxpayers pay and pay and pay until they get wise and abolish the Child Abuse Compounds.

So the district is paying the parents to HOME SCHOOL their daughter.

I home-schooled three kids. The school district owes me BIG TIME!

This is just wrong. It’s no wonder that schools are in trouble.

Don’t give them ideas. They’ll use handcuffs, chemical castration, mind-altering drugs, and electric-shock therapy, and tasers, before they consider abolishing the Child Warehouses.

Sounds like she’s getting paid to be homeschooled. One of my kids had a fear of going outside, wish I had figured this out. I spent thousands and I could have been paid thosands instead.

If one can attend summer camp, one can go to school. No one requires a teen magazine subscription for educational purposes.

Only stating the obvious, of course.

And I can’t even get the money I pay into the school system out to pay for homeschooling. What nonsense!!

She has also spent it on modeling classes for Rebecca...

So...she's afraid of regular school, but not modeling school? Yeah that makes sense. She'll probably win America's Next Top Model next season. She sounds like Tyra's kind of crazy.

Do you all notice that she doesn’t have a fear of education or learning or reading or doing schoolwork, but of the social aspects of school? I have a fear of our public schools too - gang fights, etc.

I homeschool my kids and don’t get squat from the government, but I do pay taxes for the $11K+ it costs per annum to support the holding pen public schools where gangbangers can hang out during the day and harrass the teachers.

Who EVER thought that “learning” must take place in large groups of people uninterested in learning?

In November of 2006, Rebecca enrolled at the Academy of the Sierras, a boarding school in California. Rebecca said being immersed in a school environment helped her anxiety, and she made friends and went to classes. But the school phobia soon returned, and she left around April 2007.

When Rebecca came home, she and her mother had no plan for her education. Palmerton school officials tried to work out a new individualized education plan for her, but Barbara Maykish and school officials could not reach an agreement.

(snip)

Because her daughter has gone the past year without any formal education, Barbara Maykish said she thinks she might need another compensatory education fund.

On TOP of the $46,000 they already received? As well as after the school district tried to work out a plan with her? Wow, I don't even know what to say to this...
