Right-to-Carry Map - help needed (vanity)
Gun-nuttery.com ^ | May 18, 2003 | Jeff Dege

Posted on 05/18/2008 3:21:49 PM PDT by jdege

Many of you have seen my map:

About a year ago, someone asked if he could put the map on the Concealed Carry page on Wikipedia. I said yes, and the image was added.

Since then, there have been several attempts by Wikipedia admins to have it pulled. First, it was yanked because it hadn't been posted with the permission of the creator - despite my having not only granted permission, but having explicitly added to the image a statement that I had done so.

The image was eventually restored, after I formally released the image under a Creative Commons license.

Now it's been pulled again, because it isn't properly sourced. Apparently the sources that I used in creating the image weren't appropriately non-partisan.

So I'm trying to collect sources of the type that they approve, so I can add them to the page. Unfortunately, a family crisis is preventing me from spending the sort of time I need to get this done in a reasonable amount of time.

What I have so far is here:http://www.gun-nuttery.com/rtc.php#proof

What I need are sources that indicate the date at which a state's laws became shall-issue. Best type of source would be a link on a state's official website, next best would be a contemporary report in the mainstream media - TV, radio, or newspaper, discussing the passage of the law.

If anyone can help me fill in the blanks, I'd really appreciate it.

i wish i KNEW how to answer your question 100%.

sadly, there is NO one correct answer.

in your case, OK to TX, get an OK CCW & you're "good to go" in about 1/2 the states.

betwween me & thee a NICELY-dressed lady will NEVER be arrested for carrying provided that she says that she's traveling & is AFRAID. =====> that's what i told my late wife in the days before CCW in TX. NO police officer ever bothered her about her carrying concealed in all those years, despite being "pulled over" numerous times. (VK had a HEAVY FOOT & a FAST sports car!!! = we won't talk about the BIG fines i sometimes paid for her, as a result of 70/80/90/100+MPH in a 30/40/50/55MPH zone!!!)

In Virgina local ordinances are gone and are not allowed except for VCU. Open carry is legal the whole state. Check the VCDL.org homepage for more info.

you didn't an opinion on a weapon/training for a lady.

nonetheless, UNSOLICITED advice, based on 4 decades of experience as a master range officer/Army MP officer/LEO in 4 states ===> buy a Smith & Wesson STAINLESS STEEL Chief's Special in .38SPL & go take PROFESSIONAL LESSONS on it's SAFE use.

the "stainless chief" is just about "bulletproof", pun intended, & is nearly maintenance FREE as well. it has been "THE CHOICE" of HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of LEOs as a primary/backup revolver since the early 1960s. S&W has "worked out" what FEW "bugs" it ever had & it's "just about "PURR-fect" now. (my "duckie" goes NO PLACE w/o hers in her thigh holster/back pocket of her jeans!!! she calls hers: "my little friend".)

finally, a PURSE is a POOR place to CCW for a lady. IF your purse gets "snatched" (THOUSANDS are SNATCHED each day!!!), you have done TWO BAD THINGS:

1. lost your revolver &

2. ARMED your opponent!!!

just the advice of an OLD but NOT bold LEO!!!

OK/FINE.

then tell me WHY Alexandria & Richmond are STILL arresting people for "disorderly conduct"/"brandishing" for carrying OPENLY, as little as 2 weeks ago. (it was on the TV news here just last week.)

I think it's also worth noting that in Louisiana, one need not have a CCW to keep a loaded weapon in your vehicle. Provided one is not barred from owning a weapon in the first place (i.e., convicted felon), the vehicle is considered an extension of the residence, and as long as you're in your vehicle, you can keep a loaded firearm in the gun rack, under the seat, in the center console, glove compartment, etc.

Having said that, it would still be wise to advise any law officer of that fact if pulled over, prior to reaching for your registration, insurance, and voter registration card....

GOOD ADVICE!!! (wish i had thought to say it.)

FRiends, this goes for CCW holders, TOO. (especially if you are a "southpaw" like me & your billfold is on the same side as your weapon.)

when asked for your license/registration, tell the officer (while having BOTH hands on the wheel) that you are ARMED & WHERE the weapon is!!! (please, don't give the LEO a heart attack by DRAWING it!!! = i've had THAT done by CCW holders, when i was in uniform!!!)

In some states, you are required to inform the officer if you’re carrying. In others, you are not.

If you don’t know which is true in the state you’re in, inform the officer.

If the officer has asked you to do something that will reveal your weapon - your DL is in your wallet on the same side as your holster, your registration is in your glove compartment along with your weapon, etc. - inform the officer.

If neither is the case, the appropriate response is to tell him “excuse me, while I whip this out...”

Thanks for the info. What I was looking at was a Smith & Wesson 626 with laser grip — the dealer told me it was the “Ladysmith” model without the rosewood handles. I much prefer the laser grip. He also offered professional lessons, which I will definitely take if I buy the gun.

I always try to dress nicely when I travel - doing so definitely gives one an advantage regardless of the type of problem. It’s something my well-dressed mother taught me.

That's VERY BAD advice to be handing out. To say that a lady would Never be arrested is totally absurd and irresponsible advice. Pink, do NOT listen to this advice. Get yourself a CCW in OK and then you'll be good to go. Do NOT violate the law or you could find yourself in very hot water.

pardon me, but do YOU have FOUR DECADES of actual law enforcement experience at the TOWN/CITY/COUNTY/PARISH/STATE/MILITARY/FEDERAL LEVEL??? (fwiw, i'm the only person i know of that shares that somewhat dubious distinction! = i kept moving from one jurisdiction to another because of more $$$$$$.)

in all those years, i've NEVER known ANY LEO in the southland/west to arrest a well-dressed/"decent appearing" lady, who was carrying either with/without a permit. NONE.

further, i told her to buy a weapon, get PROFESSIONAL lessons on shooting & to get licensed in OK.
