Gender Issue Lives On as Clinton’s Hopes Dim (NY SLimes Triple Barf Alert)
NY Slimes ^ | 19 May 08 | JODI KANTOR

With each passing day, it seems a little less likely that the next president of the United States will wear a skirt — or a cheerful, no-nonsense pantsuit.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is now in what most agree are the waning days of her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. To use her own phrase, she has been running “to break the highest and hardest glass ceiling” in American life, and now the presidency, or even a nomination that once seemed to be hers to claim, seems out of reach.

Along with the usual post-mortems about strategy, message and money, Mrs. Clinton’s all-but-certain defeat brings with it a reckoning about what her run represents for women: a historic if incomplete triumph or a depressing reminder of why few pursue high office in the first place.

The answers have immediate political implications. If many of Mrs. Clinton’s legions of female supporters believe she was undone even in part by gender discrimination, how eagerly will they embrace Senator Barack Obama, the man who beat her?

“Women felt this was their time, and this has been stolen from them,” said Marilu Sochor, 48, a real estate agent in Columbus, Ohio, and a Clinton supporter. “Sexism has played a really big role in the race.”

or a cheerful, no-nonsense pantsuit...

Maybe Obama should wear one to get the feminist vote?

Which is nice.

Hillary still doesn't get it. She is neither qualified or all a woman should be. She is a liar, condones adultry, says killing babies is a good thing, opts for pure socialism and she's one nasty lady.

Besides those negatives, the only reason she got to where she is becuase she married Bubba (a male pervert)....so sex has NOTHING to do with it.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I have said many times that Hillary would not be elected BECAUSE women won’t vote for her! I asked a number of women two or three years back if they would vote for a woman for President and nearly all paused for a moment and then said no. I can only imagine that many of them would not say the same thing to another woman or to a pollster but they said it to me without fear because I am a white-haired male who was an acquaintance, not a close friend or family member. All one need do is consider that women are the majority of registered voters, if they pulled together on this she would have won every primary which she obviously has not done. The women of America have only the women of America to blame for the fact that she is not the nominee.

Freud said it all in his theories. When we elect a president we are seeking a father figure extreme — a tribal chief who will stand out in the front and protect us. That’s what we are primed for.

So if a woman runs for president of a significant country (as opposed to some little Scandinavian nation or something) if she is tough we see a usurper, a person suffering from penis envy. However, if she is sweet and kind we see her as weak.

Poor Hillary was doomed form the start.

I’m not so sure that you could say that the female, former leaders of India, Pakistan, Israel and Great Britain (significant countries all) were weak or guilty of penis envy. jmho

Cheer up, gals! You could always throw your support behind Condoleezza Rice for the Republican Vice Presidential nomination...!

How's that?

Well, she's a woman. She gets my vote!

What's wrong with you people?

In addition to lacking a sense of humor, I think liberals also have no concept of irony.

Isn’t voting for Hillary because she is a woman the same as voting against Barack because he is mixed race?

Excellent!

Can you see the old Hillary miming this over the Marxist Convention loud speakers as she is given the hook?

And to think ... they dumped her for some brown guy with an empty head ... and after all she did for her country.

These kind of women (& probably men as well) have issues with their fathers. Republicans, especially, are father figures -- even the women -- so naturally these women are going to feel hostile.

BTW, that is the big problem I see with Obama. Although he has a pleasant enough personality, he lacks the gravitas of a leader, especially the leader of a major nation. He is no father figure. (Neither was Mr. Clinton.) I feel no sense of safety or protection from him. To me, he looks like something out of a Benneton ad. He can serve capuccino, but not the country.
