Sen. John McCain addresses Hispanic audience in Miami
Sun-Sentinel ^ | 5/20/08 | BY MIKE CLARY

Sen. John McCain used the anniversary of Cuban independence from Spain to declare his opposition to talking to the Castro government until extensive Democratic reforms take place, while sounding his support for a free trade agreement with Colombia.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee also attacked his Democratic rival, Barrack Obama, saying the Illinois senator was "naive, inexperienced and lacks judgment."

McCain won applause from the mostly Hispanic audience of 700 at the Sheraton Miami Mart Hotel when he lambasted Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. He touched on other themes as well including Haiti. "We have not been successful, and there are still thousands of people sitting in garbage dumps today trying to find something to eat."

Recognizing the deep poverty that continues to plague Haiti, McCain said: "I just think we've got to keep the pressure on, provide aid where necessary."

In a question from the audience that drew boos from the supportive crowd, McCain was asked about "prisoner rights in Guantanamo."

In response, the McCain said: "We need to move forward with these cases, move them to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, [for trial]. Some of these people are the most evil that's ever existed. I think they can be given trials but not the same trials that U.S. citizens receive. It's important we move forward and determine if anyone deserves to be free."

McCain was accompanied on the podium by Miami congressmen Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart. From here he is to visit a museum in Little Havana dedicated to Cuban political prisoners.

I’m not very informed with the percentages, but as an observer on the ground, I must say that Hispanics are as racists as the next ethnic group, if not more. In many cases I don’t even see the majority of Hispanics voting for a woman.

(This is slightly related, but not really)
I am married to a Russian and I was talking to a cousin of her’s. He works for the United Russia political party as a spin Dr. in his region and I asked him who he would like me to vote for. He said: “Not Hillary, women have no place in politics; not Mccain, he will spend too much money on Iraq; Obama...maybe.”

There’s a joke I like to recite sometimes about the a lowly 3rd world country president.

The President of Nicaragua (any 3rd world country can be named) goes into his office in the morning and asks the secretary what appointments he has that morning. The secretary says: “we have a slight problem, the President and the Pope were booked at the same time, who would you like to meet first?” The president thinks for a second and he says: “let the Pope in first, at least I only have to kiss his ring.”

Call me crazy but I think Obama will give that treatment instead of receiving it.

If you don't want more illegal immigration vote McCain.

You are certifiable. McCain wants to grant amnesty to the 15 to 20 million illegals already here who will in turn be able to sponsor 70 to 100 million more LEGAL IMMIGRANTS thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification. This country will be destroyed forever with a stroke of a pen. We can't absorb those kinds of numbers.

Legalizing the illegal doesn't solve the illegal immigration problem that has been ongoing for the past twenty years or the entire time McCain has been in Congress.

The Border Patrol apprehends and sends back a million people a year who are trying to enter this country illegally. Another 500,000 to one million are able to evade the BP and get into the country. These people are coming here to get jobs and to escape the corruption and poverty of their own countries. McCain's amnesty policy rewards law breakers and will encourage many more to come in for the next amnesty.

You aren't understanding my point. McCain was there discussing American foreign policy. If South Americans can stay in their country, they will. If Obama supports despotic governements and FARC, they will win, people will flee the destruction. The mass illegal immigration is due to populist leaders like Obama who have conned people with the help of failed American foreign policy from Carter and Clinton.

Carter certified the Chavez election. President Bush has done a good job supporting Uribe. McCain will do a better job than Obama. McCain is pro life, will fight for the best itnerest of our country, and support our allies.

I’m not excited about any presidential candidate. I have posted a time or two that McCain could win and receive a good vote from white and Hispanic Democrats because they wouldn’t vote for the black candidate. Then McCain would brag about his victory and how he won back the Reagan Democrats and how the Hispanics supported him because of his humane approach to illegal immigration.

That could very well happen, and McCain would never acknowledge the real explanation: a bunch of white and Hispanics Dems. who wouldn’t vote for the black guy.

The Greeks knew of this scenario......and it is no coincidence it sounds a lot like Kaka.....

kakistocracy (kak·is·toc·ra·cy) n.
Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens.

YES-— it is a REAL word, and perfectly describes what America has become.

I understand your point, but the vast majority of the illegals come from Mexico and Central America, not South America.

Nonsense. The vast majority of immigrants, legal and illegal, are coming here for the opportunities and the money, not fleeing despotic governments. Poverty, not oppression is the real reason they are coming. We have a program to handle asylum seekers.

Then give up and forget ever winning another election. Republicans will only get about 55-60% of the white vote and about 6-8% of the black vote. The only other opportunity to gain is with Hispanics and if we allow Dems to turn them into welfare wards than forget it. We need to consistently get 40% of Hispanics and a conservative message will resonate with them. I live and work around Hispanics and I guarantee the only reason they vote Dems is because they have been convinced the Republicans are just rich white guys who hate everybody.

It has to be a grassroots effort.

Ain't gonna happen for the GOP then. The grassroots are the only thing standing between congress and shamnesty. We aren't about to go into hispander mode for the sake of McCain.

We need to consistently get 40% of Hispanics and a conservative message will resonate with them.

Demography is destiny. In 1965 Hispanics made up 1% of the population. Today they are 16% and by 2050 they will be 29%. Immigration, legal and illegal, has changed the demography of this country dramatically. Getting 40% while the Dems get 60% will make us the permanent minority party. It is simple math. By 2050, non-Hispanic whites will be 47% of the population.

Hispanics have a 45% out of wedlock birth rate, second only to blacks with 68%. They have they highest school drop out rate, by far. Their birthrate is twice the general population. They have the highest teen pregnancy rate. This is the social pathology for failure and greater dependence on government. They are a typical Dem constituency. These statistics don't indicate that they are receptive to the conservative message.

Cubans are the exception.
