Sixteen migrant workers were taken into custody early this morning from a tenant house on a farm in Savannah.
Lev Kubiak, with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office says 11 men and 5 women were taken into custody after an investigation that began with complaint from a citizen. Kubiak wouldn't comment on the length of the investigation leading up to the raid.
Those in custody were transported to Batavia for further questioning at a DHS facility there.
New York Farm Bureau President Mark James says he arrived at the scene on Route 31, and believes there is evidence that authorities acted inappropriately...James says one worker was able to document she was in the country legally, and spoke with James after authorities left.
Kubiak says the raid was conducted in accordance with the federal search warrant, adding that while those allegations are occasionally levelld, the charges of mistreatment are "absolutely not true".
James says the inability to reach agreement on national legislation is the major cause for many raids he believes are conducted similarly...James says the workers taken into custody this morning had all filed required paperwork with the farm owners, but that farmers are facing a difficult choice a number of times.
Kubiak says employers can help themselves out with that issue by using the "E-Verify" program, an online service through the Department of Homeland Security, that allows potential employers to verify documents presented by potential workers.

Now, if the liberals were thrown out of NY, too, the farmers might have a chance.
