In "Rendezvous With Destiny," a multimedia presentation by World-Herald photographers Peter Soby, James R. Burnett and Kent Sievers, you can join a group of Midlands veterans on a special visit to Washington, D.C., and then witness personal stories of war, loss and triumph.
And support http://www.honorflight.org/ - making it possible for WWII veterans to visit their Memorial.
I went with my dad on the May 3rd Louisiana Honor Air flight to Washington. I am at a loss for words to describe that day! I’ve thanked God every day since that I had the means and time to do this. I was a guardian for two other WWII vets, who kept thanking me for going!! I told them that I considered it an honor to be in their presence and to accompany all of them. I’m lucky enough to have had 4 best of the best days in my life: the day my husband and I were married, the day our son was born, the day he came home from Iraq and the day I was able to go to Washington in the company of some of the men of our Greatest Generation. God bless them all, the good people who organize these flights, our troops and their families! May we NEVER, NEVER FORGET! (Okay, now I need to find some tissue!)
This is really a wonderful thing. My father just signed up for this and I certainly hope he will be able to go. I would urge anyone that can to donate to this wonderful cause. It is truly an honor to serve these wonderful veterans in any small way and sending them on a once in a lifetime trip to see the memorials is a great thing to do for them. They are so very appreciative and we must honor them while we are lucky enough to have them in our presence.
Thanks for posting this - I wish more FReepers would have seen it.
“It’s a small world after all”
(seeing how I just stumbled on the Honor Flight enterprise a few
days ago.
I’ll be giving my brother his choice of Fathers Day presents:
1. A combo pack of History Channels Battle 360 DVDs (the ones on
the WWII tour of the carrier Enterprise and the DVD of Patton’s campaign.
OR
2. I’ll pony up the $250 to the Mid-Missouri “adopt a veteran”
program for an Honor Flight, in the name of my brother.
Even if he chooses option #1, I’ll probably take care of option #2,
finances willing.
