TROOPS WORRY: "What if a Democrat wins?" Mullen warns military: stay out of politics (REPOST)

WASHINGTON: The highest-ranking U.S. military officer has written an unusual open letter to all those in uniform, warning them to stay out of politics as the United States approaches a presidential election in which the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be a central, and certainly divisive, issue.

"The U.S. military must remain apolitical at all times," wrote Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "It is and must always be a neutral instrument of the state, no matter which party holds sway."

(snip)

Mullen said he was inspired to write the essay after receiving a constant stream of legitimate, if troubling, questions while visiting U.S. military personnel around the world, including, "What if a Democrat wins?" and, "What will that do to the mission in Iraq?"

Thanks for the links.

I suspect I was the only resident to have even noticed the lack of flags.

But privately, when I think of those people snooping around at night filling those flag holders with rocks and glue, I imagine myself perched quietly, in a dark place, with a

No need for even imagining that, of course and I assure you there are many, particularly among the older folks and the churched, who crave—LONG—for someone like you to take a stand and put up flags.

Find you some friends locally and play Take Back Iwo Jima!

Go Christmas Caroling on Flag Day, with patriotic songs...

Have some fun.

Of course, if Obama refuses to leave office when his term expires, I would certainly expect the military to lead a restoration of Constitutional government, but that is an entirely different question.

Not really. A Constitutional violation is a constitutional violation, whether of Amendments XX and XXII, (Date of President taking/leaving office and term limits) or some other section. Such as several of the first 10 amendments, including the 10th itself.

That said, failure to yield power as required makes a pretty good line in the sand. Even if it comes after much damage has been done.

Last time the Clintons were in the WH, our soldiers were treated like waiters.

True, but Obama is likely to treat them like scullery maids, garbage men and the guy who cleans out the sewage treatment plant.

You're right - doing something makes the imagining doing something unnecessary. It's the feeling of not being able to do something that makes such imaginings enticing - frustration.

There must be at least a few sane folks in this town - maybe I can find them...

And thanks for the suggestions!

We have survived worse than Obama in this country, and will again.

We NEVER had someone worse than what Obama promises to be. Carter and Clinton are uber-patriots in comparison. The babbling fool Carter brought us the Islamic regimes in the Middle East, Clinton's policies brought us 9/11. Thousands of Americans died for these two idiots blunders. Don't try to imagine what Obama, who will disarm the USA military and citizen, will get us. Accepting Obama is America's death wish. Terror and death will come in the form of terrorism emboldened like never before and a victory of the culture of abortion, crime and immorality at home.

Never ever accept Obama.

The very thought of a Marine saluting Obama makes my stomach twist into a knot.

Well, I hope he meant that they couldn’t actively campaign, but that they should exercise their right to vote!

They should give him the same salute Yobomba gives the flag - the Bronx salute.

I have a curious suspicion that Mullen doesn't particularly want military people to vote because they tend to vote Republican.

They would have, under Gore. And they were’t happy under Clinton. Clinton decimated tthe militaryith his “peacetime benefit” cuts...They didn’t have to resign, they were forced into early retirements.

“They would have, under Gore. And they were’t happy under Clinton. Clinton decimated tthe militaryith his “peacetime benefit” cuts...They didn’t have to resign, they were forced into early retirements.”

But the point is, as bad as it was under Clinton, they had to throw people out of the service - there was no crisis due to failure to re-enlist enough soldiers, or resigned commissions.

I don’t think a Democrat as president would have an effect on military retention. If we pull out of Iraq as the democrats suggest, if anything, would improve military retention rates.

So it’s safe to say that military retention is more closely related to military operations tempo, than it is to the political affiliation of the CINC.

I say never accept Obama or Clinton. They are both scum. Except we know that the Clintons are the scummiest to walk the earth.

The U.S. military is sword to protect and defend the Constitution and the lawful orders of the President and the Officers assigned over them.

They will fulfill their oath and obey the lawful orders of the President, even if that President is Barrack NMN Obama.

Now if Obama decided to suspend the Constitution and declare himself ‘Dictator for Life’; THEN the military steps in to save the country.

If the country elects Obama it is already lost and will get (for 4 to 8 years) what it deserves. Perhaps then the electorate will learn not to be bamboozled by a smooth talking socialist charlatan.

The Constitution has already been so perverted and rendered little more than "a guideline" by scumbag politicians and judges, declaring oneself "Dictator for Life" may be found to be the emanation of a penumbra in there somewhere....

Yes, but at what point do Conservatives think the military overturning a lawful national election utilizing the electoral college system is a good thing?

Some Conservatives would say “when an unpalatable and anti-Constitution candidate wins”. This Conservative says never.

We play the game by the rules set in the Constitution. When and if they try to change the rules of the game without amending the Constitution, THEN we restore the Constitution. Until then our foes (and our “friends”) have walked on, but not attempted to throw out, the Constitution.

The present administration has been one of the worst as far as adherence to Constitutional principles, yet how many of us yearn for a military coup? How many military coups in history have instituted anything other than a military dictatorship?
