MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Suspected drug gang hitmen shot dead a mayor in western Mexico as he drove back from a day out with his family, the latest politician to die in Mexico's drug war, a state attorney general's office said on Monday.
Gunmen caught up to Mayor Marcelo Ibarra on a highway and shot him in the head on Sunday night as he was returning to his hometown of Villa Madero in Michoacan state, a key front in the government's army-led war against drug cartels.
"We believe this was linked to drug gangs, they were pursuing him," a spokeswoman at the state attorney general's office said. She said Ibarra's wife and two children were unharmed.
Police declined to say why the mayor was a target.
His murder occurred six months after gunmen in northern Mexico killed former federal lawmaker and former mayoral candidate Juan Antonio Guajardo and comes amid a rash of police killings this year.

There is a civil war going on in Mexico between the corrupt government and the corrupt drug cartels. The Government funds it’s war through taxes and the cartels fund their war with drug money. The cartel’s buy the support of the poor (an extensive majority in Mexico) through lucrative employment opportunities. Soon it will become more political as the Socialists employ the cartels.
Ping!

They're not talking. Talking is a death penalty.
Ah, Mexico! Where more reporters and LEO’s are killed than Iraq. Only second to Iraq in beheadings....if the people of this country had any idea what was actually going on with our Southern neighbor, they would NOT be happy....perhaps that’s why it’s such a well kept secret. And this is the kind of country our new immigrants will happily turn this into.
You know how they say it’s hard to find a good man to run for office? Bet it’s harder in Mexico.
And if past history is any indication, with our ludiocrously porous border, this chit will soon becoming to a neighborhood near you.
In front of the family. Lovely people. RIP.
We need to find the drug routes and napalmed them like we did the HoChiMin Trail.
If Mexico's Federal government doesn’t get a handle on this drug problem then the situation will get worse not better.
The problem as I see it is the ever increasing crawl of this violence across the border and yet our government seems helpless to stop drug sewers from seeping North.
I honestly believe that it is going to take a strong Mexican military armed with martial law to get control.
In the mean time these pieces of human garbage will continue to soil Mexico.
You people just don’r get it. Drugs do nor hurt anyone. If we would just make drugs legal then all this would stop. So be sure and vote Libratarion. /sarc>

Heres a tidbit from the time Doc and I had a private surgery clinic and she was also on staff at the local hospital down in South America.
All ways scared me when Doc would be called out to the ER especially during fiesta or Sabado en la noche.
The drug heads and dealers would come in all shot the hell up, beat to a pulp or else cut to pieces.
No matter what time Doc went to the ER I always went along just in case of trouble with a patient.
One night she got a call because the regular ER doctors on call refused to come out on a holiday weekend.
When we got to the hospital the doctor in charge asked that she start by stitching up a thug who had been in a fight with several cartel members over the sale of Cocaine.
The man was handcuffed to the table so she went to work.
He was really high and in very vulgar language refused any kind of pain killer.
These cartel guys had taken a broken bottle and absolutely sliced his face where he was not recognizable as a human.
I stopped counting stitches after the first hour.
When Doc got done, the cops came in and started to remove him from the ER.
As he passed Doc he tried to break loose, grabbing for a gun from an officer yelling he wanted to shoot Doc.
Before she could get out of the way he lunged and spit in Docs face.
He called her a sorry bit%h (puta) and some other names in Spanish before one of the officers knocked him unconscious with the butt of his rifle.
Drugs, I don't need no stinkin drugs...........
