(Cardinal) George Temporarily Removes Pfleger From St. Sabina
CBS2 Chicago ^ | 6/3/2008 | n/a

CBS 2 News has learned that Francis Cardinal George is temporarily removing Father Michael Pfleger from his position as pastor of St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church on Chicago's South Side.

CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports the move comes after several days of deliberation and consultation by the Cardinal, who first learned about Pfleger's racially charged comments about Sen. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from the pulpit of Trinity Unity Church of Christ last Thursday night.

The Cardinal immediately contacted Pfleger who agreed not to refer to the presidential candidates by name, but as CBS 2 reported at the time, there remained the possibility of some further disciplinary action against Pfleger.

The Cardinal reportedly spoke to Pfleger again this morning.

A spokesman for the archdiocese would neither confirm nor deny action had been taken to remove Pfleger. Another spokesman said she expected to have some announcement later today.

Indications are that another Chicago priest would take over at St. Sabina, while plans for the permanent reassignment of Father Pfleger, who's been there far longer than is customary in the archdiocese, would be accelerated....

This man Pfleger is a shame and an embarrassment to the Catholic Church. I can’t believe that even now they still have not defrocked him and kicked him out. Amazing.

Good decision but he will now be perceived as some sort of martyr.

Archbishop George of Chicago is a cardinal — a distinction that identifies him as a key priest of the diocese of Rome — because he has received that personal distinction from the Pope. As cardinal his chief right under canon law is to serve as an elector at papal conclaves that elect popes (till he reaches the age of 80). This is all distinct from his authority as Archbishop of Chicago, which places all of that diocese’s clergy and property under his power. As Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal George rules his local church, including Fr. Pfleger (in theory, anyway). Every diocesan priest makes a promise of obediance to his bishop and his successors at the time of his ordination.

I predict his will build his own independent, money-laundering church house. Apparently there is big money in this hate business, hiding behind religion.

Not if he is removed to a remote parish somewhere in the boonies.

One of the biggest eye openers for me in RCIA was that these Pastors are really employees. The boss speaks and they must listen.

Finally. I don’t care if you love or loathe Hillary Clinton. Pfleger’s performance was so uncharitable, cruel and demeaning to the woman, it was a scandal.

He’s given so much scandal, he should be given the boot.

I think the good Father needs to spend some time in contemplation - solo - combined with some counselling and interviews as to his mental status.

If I saw a person ranting as he was allowed in his elevated position - I would have called him as suffering from a breakdown.

I have no idea if the exposure granted us by the media was inflated as to its significant hysteria but he truly needs some help.... (politics aside).

The Catholic Church’s position is that once a priest is ordained he is a priest for life. Very rarely will a priest be de-frocked, and in fact I can’t remember a recent instance.

Parish priest who misbehave and flout the bishop can be sent to all sorts of remote places where they cannot agitate.

This congregation agitated to keep Pfleiger there, and they were given their way. Now we can see the harm letting someone stay at one parish for 30 years can cause.

Pedophilia isn’t enough to remove a priest from duty, but anti-white hate speech (from a white priest, no less) is where the church draws the line. Isn’t it also interesting that Obama finally resigns from the church, not due to Wright’s anti-white ramblings, but to the anti-white ramblings of a white Catholic priest. THAT’S where Obama draws the line. LOL! Can’t call him no Uncle Tom!

The liberal Chicago Tribune had 3 full pages of anti-Pleger, anti-cowardly Cardinal letters to the editor this morning.
