Very profound statements that I will ponder.

Thank you for the post.

he did promise to put in justices like Alito and Roberts

Examine the wording very carefully.

I wish more Congresscritters had the testicular strength to fight the globul warming like Rep. Rohrabacher did the other day: It’s a great read and an awesome slap down on the floor of the House.

I have not always agreed with Rep. Rohrabacher...but he is spot on with this and deserves some big kudos!!

Just because we believe firmly that we are in the right doesn’t necessarily mean most voters agree with us. Unfortunately, the number of votes is all that counts.

How can voters agree with us if they don't know what we stand for?!? Right now the Dems are the party that stands for something, so voters choose them rather than a party that stands for nothing, as is the current Republican party.

And what does McCain stand for?!? Standing for nothing because you're scared people won't like who you are is a great way to be marginalized and rejected. And that's what is happening to the GOP.

McCain must appeal to the squishy middle if he is to win. Possibly these demands would accomplish that, but I’m not so sure.

Agreed. And true conservatism doesn't do well, even in the Republican primary (the only way to come close is by throwing in some gratuitous red-meat nanny-statism and flag-waving...true small-government conservatism gets mocked).

But I urge everyone to go back and listen to some of President Reagan's speeches...even brief snippets will show how compelling a small-government message can be, if presented in the appropriate way and without sniping from the Faux Conservatives. Many young people have never heard the tenets of conservatism expressed.

Mr. Newt on that couch with Pelosi

I hear you there. The left never comes right. The right always move left. That is why I don't like to see these people on the couch together. There are more RINOs then there are DINOs.

I believe in a "ratchet" model...it creeps to the left, but is not able to go back to the right. Eventually, after too far to the left, there's a correction...we can hope.

“Today about 42% of likely voters call themselves Democrats and about 32% Republicans.”

I’d be careful with any stats coming from the MSM after ‘Operation Chaos’.

LOL

"Conservative" would be to conserve our own, letting others blow through their oil reserves first, so we're the last ones with any easy-to-extract remaining.

Not true. It will take years to start seeing oil flow if we start now. Add to that estimates I've seen that show 2 trillion barrels of untouched oil....... enough to last us over 100 years! Conserving that much oil is foolish.

I am seriously considering voting for Bob Barr

Good. I hope his campaign does well! If he doesn't, it just sends a further message to the GOP that conservatism is irrelevant.

"ratchet" model...

I can see that. A conditioning, so to speak.

All I can say is that I am sick and tired of giving to the reds. I really want to defend my ground. But they give me this scare tactic. Either you get lefty Hussein or the RINO McCain. Sure, I will vote McCain because I don't want no hard core commie badword in the White House. But I aint giving my money to McCain or the RNC.

Agreed. However, Reagan came in after an extended period of liberal dominance, with most people viewing their problems as caused by the missteps of liberalism. They were ready for a backlash against liberalism and big government.

Today we're coming off an extended period of (perceived) consertative dominance. Many people view their problems as being caused by conservatism. They're ready for a backlash against conservatism.

McCain has an uphill climb against a strong headwind. It isn't helped by the apparently large numbers of conservatives who intend to boycott him because he isn't sufficiently pure.

I hope they're equally willing to take responsibility for the consequences when we are dealing for the next few decades with the problems caused by Obama as president, a filibuster-proof Senate, and perhaps four new liberal judges on the Supreme Court.

If the RNC leaves me, I will be forced to look for a new party.

I am not suggesting that we NOT hold our noses and vote for McCain...I am suggesting that we actually reward the Conservatives still fighting the good fight on the floors of the House and Senate by sending THEM our money.

I was all ready to send McCain a nice big check after he got my name from President Bush’s donor list. Not that I wanted to, but was ready to ‘do it for the gipper’ so to speak.

Then McCain goes to New Orleans and trash talks the very President who generously endorsed him and gave him his donor list!!

It really pissed me off and the check was torn up!

Screw McCain, unless and until he stops thumbing his nose at conservatives and trash talking our Commander in Chief.

It’s just unseemly.

That makes sense. You might consider that this election might be a correction to the left from the Bush corruption of what 'right' means.

You might also consider that the continuous left drift might be the growing disparity between upper and lower incomes forcing the lower to rely more on government than on private industry for economic well-being.

Yep. And notice, as you go down his list, that he touches all the essential bases.

If you want tax cuts, then you need to agree with people who support family, life, and marriage, leading to a sound society and economy and sensible voters.

If you oppose abortion, then you need to agree with people who oppose the ILLEGAL immigration that is wrecking our institutions and the rule of law. You can’t equate the lives of innocent babies with criminal illegals coming from a country that is overflowing with money and natural resources that only needs to get its act together. It’s their damned, rich, corrupt government that is sending them here, to pile up even more money to send back home and to ensure that none of these people really benefit from it.

If you want to defend our country, then you need to base that defense on a solid morality and on solid families who bring their kids up properly.

You can’t defend our country with one hand while aborting babies and blessing gay marriages with the other, the way Rudy proposed to do. You can’t support life while welcoming in cheap illegal labor to enrich your corporate friends and donors, causing hospitals to close their doors and the welfare system to go broke and throwing young Americans out of jobs, as Huckabee proposed.

We need conservatism across the board, and when we get it, there are a ton of votes waiting to support it, as we saw especially in the 2004 election.

Unfortunately, I doubt whether the RNC or McCain even BEGIN to understand any of this. It’s not in any of their plans, and no sign that it ever will be as long as McCain is the candidate.

Third party is not the way to go...it will just guarantee a win for the Marxists. Don’t fall for it.

The way to go, is to send a message to the RNC by sending your money to conservative candidates and working in the party to oust the Rhinos in the coming years!

Looks like we're in agreement, as these are two points on which I have written in the past.

However, you and I are heretics on FR for pointing out the importance of that latter elephant in the room. But the reality is, the gap is increasing and it is having real effects...and ignoring it doesn't make it go away. (Faux conservatives have that 'head-in-sand' tendency of other liberals...I refer to those who express this tendency as the Ostrich Brigade.)

One specific on which I would comment is your use of "income," when it could also be viewed in terms of wealth. A progressive income tax maintains stratification, by hindering the poor from gaining wealth even if they do increase their income.

And since the "common defense" protects wealth as well as income, it would make sense that it is insuring the wealthy more than the poor, not just the high-income more than the poor. Thus, a flat tax, fair tax, etc., alone is the best system. We must view wealth levels, too, when considering such gaps.
