Sympathy For The Great Satan

Iranians Turn Away from Their Own Ruler, and to the US --

On a recent afternoon, while riding a rickety bus down Vali Asr Avenue, Tehran's main thoroughfare, I overheard two women discussing the grim state of Iranian politics. One of them had reached a rather desperate conclusion. "Let the Americans come," she said loudly. "Let them sort things out for us once and for all." Everyone in the women's section of the bus absorbed this casually, and her friend nodded in assent.

Although their leaders still call America the "Great Satan," ordinary Iranians' affection for the United States seems to be thriving these days, at least in the bustling capital. This rekindled regard is evident in people's conversations, their insatiable demand for U.S. products and culture, and their fascination with the U.S. presidential campaign. One can't do reliable polling about Iranians' views under their theocratic government, of course, but these shifts were still striking to me as a longtime visitor -- not least because liking the United States is also a way for Iranians to register their frustration with their own firebrand president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

It might startle some Americans to realize that Iran has one of the most pro-American populations in the Middle East. Iranians have adored America for nearly three decades, a sentiment rooted in nostalgia for Iran's golden days, before the worst of the shah's repression and the 1979 Islamic revolution. But today's affection is new, in a sense, or at least different.

“Let the Americans come,” she said loudly. “Let them sort things out for us once and for all.”
You know, you could substitute the word “Americans” for Chicoms, Cubans, North Koreans, or islamos and you could do a pretty good impersonation of an average LibTard.

They have seen what has happened with Iraq.

What is the old saying? “Let he who would be free strike the first blow.”
Tempting as Imperialism is, it is a burden that doesn’t fit well on American shoulders. We are too nice, too open and too honest to run an empire well. To be am Empire one must wallow in blood from time to time—we are not up to it. We were part of an empire once and we didn’t like it.
Let the Shah’s son rule and get rid of the political power of the mullahs. Religious people do not make good rulers in history (look at Cromwell in England).

Consider the source. I've read similar articles (op-eds) over the years and I suspect it is propaganda. Have we not seen this somewhere else (e.g. Iraq)? Those opposed to the regime in Iran will tell you what they think you want to hear, not necessarily the truth.

If they think Hollywood is good then they still want to chop off our heads.

I've heard this anecdotal evidence for years out of Iran, but have seen no physical proof that it would be worth our effort.

R. Emmett Tyrell wrote something in Am Spec awhile back called ‘the Strategy of the Bar-room Brawler’. Essentially it came down to not trying to change the society, but just busting up the current tyrannical government. It might be worth a few (a lot?) of bombs to take out the government bldgs (& mullahs), military installations & maybe some mosques. Then the Iranian people could have another go. I certainly would agree that we wouldn’t want to send troops at this point.

And that's exactly why Iran and Syria are causing so much trouble for us. IF Iraq ends up being a stable, reasonable democratic country (i.e. along the lines of Turkey) it's going to be a long harder for the neighboring countries mullahs and dictators to hang on. granted Iran is very dangerous, but they're acting out of fear not strength.

and their fascination with the U.S. presidential campaign.

Trust me guys, it ain't worth being fascinated with.

Not to detract from the main point, of course. 70% of Iranians look favorably upon the US. If Iran were our ally as it once was, things would be very different in the Middle East. We can thank Carter for screwing that all up.
