'We can't deport 12 million illegals!' Oh really...

When discussing the problems massive illegal immigration has caused for the American taxpayer, many are at a loss when it comes to what to do with the millions of illegals who are already here. The majority of Americans want tougher border controls (are you listening up there in Washington?). People want immigration laws enforced, they want employers to be responsible for hiring legal workers, and they don't want to reward law-breaking with amnesty. What Congress and many Americans don't realize is that by doing the basics to stop the hiring of illegal aliens, deportation will take care of itself. It's the basics of supply and demand.

As Rachel Alexander noted in a recent posting in The Loft, "Since Arizona's local law enforcement began enforcing illegal immigration laws and an employer sanctions law went into effect, illegal immigrants have been fleeing the state in large numbers."

Fewer illegal immigrants are using hospital emergency rooms, so waiting times have decreased. Although the rest of the country is in an economic slump, unemployment is going down in Arizona, from 4.5% in January to 4.1% in March. Day laborers loitering outside of Home Depot and other stores have mostly disappeared, ending months of confrontation between illegal immigrant sympathizers and protesters. Desert lands near the border are returning to their pristine condition and the wildlife is coming back. Identity theft and car thefts are decreasing.

That's right.... by simply enforcing immigration laws and penalizing employers for hiring illegal aliens, the numbers of illegal aliens went DOWN. Does this mean they all left the country and returned home? No, of course not. Some probably did, while others went to another area of America where laws are not respected or enforced.

The point, however, is that this crackdown on illegal immigration did not involve "rounding them up," or mass deportation. This phrase is often used by immigration reform critics as a way to demonstrate the "mean spiritedness" of those who want illegal immigration to stop. As readers can see from the Arizona example, deportation takes care of itself by simply enforcing the laws regarding the hiring of illegals. Stop the demand, and the supply goes away.

Now, it appears the White House is ramping up its efforts to go after employers who hire illegal aliens. As noted in the Associated Press story Bush orders contractors to check legal status of employees, "President Bush has signed an executive order requiring contractors and others who do business with the federal government to make sure their employees can legally work in the U.S."

The federal government has had some embarrassing moments when illegal workers have been discovered to be working for contractors they've hired, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a news conference. For that reason it's trying to get its own house in order, Chertoff said.

''The federal government should lead by example and not merely by exhortation,'' he said.

Rep. Brian Bilbray, a California Republican who heads the Immigration Reform Caucus, is quoted in the story as saying, "I think it's a great decision. I think it's what the American people have been asking for, common-sense, basic things that are not Draconian or dramatic. Employer verification addresses the real problem and that is illegal employment."

If there are no jobs available for illegal aliens, they will return to their own countries. They will go where the jobs are. It's a simple concept. Yes, we can deport 12 million illegal aliens. We can do it without "rounding them up" or using extra resources. All American employers need to do is dry up the jobs.

We don’t have to. Self-deportation is the answer. It is also the simplest and most cost-effective solution..

Round them up, treat them as invaders of a foreign Army and treat Mexican government’s encouraging illegal border crossings as an ACT OF WAR.

We can do what we have the WILL to do.

As my wife's grandmother used to say: "Can't means won't."

That statement has never seemed truer than in the illegal immigration debate.

The open borders crowd loves to repeat the refrain that "We can't deport 12 million illegals (or whatever the number is" as if those of us advocating border enforcement are the nutball extremists. In reality, it is the open borders advocates who are the extremists, because they don't want to deport anybody. Think I'm exaggerating?

Here are the Senators who voted against the Cornyn amendment , which would have established a permanent bar for gang members, terrorists, and other criminals looking to snag a shamnesty visa. Republicans underlined:

Never forget McCain not only pushed the amnesty bill, he refused to allow exclusions for the worst of the lot. Notice Osama Obama is a like-minded extremist as well.

'We can't deport 12 million illegals!' Oh really...

You have an open garbage can in your yard that attracts 20,000 flies every day.

Can you chase down and swat 20,000 flies per day?

Probably not.

But, wouldn't it be much simpler to .......

........ shut the garbage can lid? (Severe penalties for employers of illegals that are actually enforced)

With a closed garbage can lid, the 20,000 flies in your yard fly away of their own accord and find other garbage cans to eat out of.

Yes, round them up.

But first, identify them.

Can you? Without denying civil liberties to legitimate US citizens? How about just sweeping through the neighborhoods and gather all of 'them', legal and illegal alike and making them prove who they are?

No discrimination there, right?

The solution is deny the services and the entitlements and they will leave.

Yes, we can deport 12 million illegal aliens.

I agree, only problem is that there's more likely close to 30 million of them.

If we don't do something soon it'll be 50 million.

This is what Fred Thompson and many others have talked about as a solution to the problem. Take away the jobs and benefits and the problem STARTS to work itself out.

It truly is impossible to round up 12 (or 20) million people and send them home. It cannot be done, even with the most draconian policies. But as others in the thread have said, policies which promote self-deportation would do the job. End the entitlement handouts, end the free education for illegals, end birthright citizenship if the parents are illegally in the country, etc. Drop the regulation requiring hospitals to treat people in the country illegally. And build more than a “virtual fence” at the border.

We're Capitalists aren't we? Well ... make deportation an industry like any other ... if we can find, ‘process’ and deport one- we can find, process and deport all of them.

If there's a will there's a way. America lacks the will, or else they would elect leaders committed to ending this travesty!

I want tougher sanctions on employers who hire illegals - not just more fines that are passed to their customers as a cost of doing business - but some jail time for for the employers. This would remove the magnet that draws the illegals here. Those who are here for work will go home when there's no work.

Those illegals who would remain are either here for the Welfare, or are Criminals looking for easy pickings and easy prisons. These last two groups must be deported as they are detected.

For all the protests about government abuse of rights people are more than willing to cast those fears aside when it comes to illegals. It isn't a crime to be Hispanic in America but by default in order to get rid of the bulk of illegals we need to round up anyone with brown skin.

Crack down on those who hire or grant sanctuary and get rid of the benefits and the problem STARTs to resolve itself.
