Washington, D.C. (AHN) - First Lady Laura Bush spoke candidly for the first time about the presidential race on Monday, saying she admired Sen. Hillary Clinton's (D-NY) "endurance" and that Michelle Obama's controversial statements had been misconstrued.
"I know what its like to run those campaigns, to be the candidate and how very difficult it is both emotionally and physically," The first lady said in an ABC interview while in Slovenia with President George Bush for a summit with European leaders. "It's a huge endurance, process of endurance, and so I'll have to say I have a lot of admiration for her endurance and strength."
Asked about the controversial remark by Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) wife, Laura Bush said, "I think she probably meant I'm 'more proud,' you know, is what she really meant... that's one of the things you learn and that's one of the really difficult parts both of running for president and for being the spouse of the president, and that is, everything you say is looked at and in many cases misconstrued."
Michelle Obama had earned the ire of conservatives and critics in February when she said during speech in Milwaukee, "Hope is making a comeback and let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
Laura Bush has class and she is a decent person. But this stuff is not helpful.
I think Michelle Obama could issue her own clarifications and
had she done so immediately this would not be as big an issue.
“Laura Bush has class and she is a decent person.”
Typical white person.....
Honesty from the First Lady, is not helpful?
Post of the Day!
Sorry, Laura, I don’t buy it. When put together with her pastor’s anti-US tirades, I believe Michelle meant what she said and said what she meant about pride in her country.
But in her own way, on purpose or not (I think on purpose), she got her dig in to Michelle. “I'm sorry dear, you surely must have misspoke..” Now Mrs. Obamessiah either looks like an idiot not able to say what she means, or she meant what she said...
This is called “being gracious”
I like the way you think.
It is her opinion. Volunteering opinions isn’t helpful.
I guess Ms. Obama would have been proud of her country if it was Sudan, or Pakistan, though?
This woman and her husband could be your next leaders, and they hate your country. Someone explain that logic to me.
Laura Bush is, and always has been, a better woman than me.
This is class.
This is a lady.
More power to her - I could not say it. I’d probably just keep my trap shut ala the adage, “If you can’t say something nice...”
Laura Bush as always is gracious and classy.
She will be missed next year.
Laura, shut up.
I hope the First Lady doesn’t expect those two hateful hags or their possessed familiars to be gracious in return.
Mrs. Bush was asked a couple of questions in her role as First LADY and she acted accordingly. The fact that to some extent it border lined on damning with faint praise is just the fun part. She owned them both with her answers. “Nice effort there Hillary, I am proud of you, you went the distance, of course you lost, but I won't bring that little annoyance up...”
I can almost she her taking Michelle's hand and patting it ever so ladylike, “Now dear, I know that is not what you really meant to say, and with time and experience you'll do better I just know you will” and Michelle ripping her hand away and cursing “no, that's is exactly what I meant” with Laura smiling ever so politely yet in a mildly patronizing way and saying “Oh my, well isn't that just delightful...” rolling her eyes and walking away..
The difference between having class and not having any at all...
Jorge and Laura Bush are CLUELESS. They do not have the ability to distinguish their loyal friends and those that wish them nothing but harm. Laura was not misconstrued. She was out and out lied about by Kitty Kelly. Kitty Kelly said Laura pushed drugs in college. That is not only preposterous but it is libelous. And I saw none other than Chwissy Mathews interview Kelly when she made this claim and he was not outraged nor did he kick her off the program. NO ONE will treat Michelle Obama the way the sitting First Lady was treated by Kitty on MSM television. If and when someone treats Michelle as Laura Bush herself was treated, then I would admire the First Lady for speaking up and saying enough is enough, but for Laura Bush to interject herself here may be what CLUELESS goodie two shoes do, but it ignores the reality of what unfair press is, and no one should know more than the Bushes what unfair press is.
Hey Laura!! Shut up already.
Why? I’m guessing if she had said the opposite, freepers would be praising her.
